Hi all,

I have a question as to whether or not it is useful to be LPC eligible, even if one plans to continue onto doctoral study. I am a current MA clinical student, and have taken all of the required courses to be LPC eligible. I am taking Lifespan right now, which I find dull and time consuming. The class is until 10 pm, and I am up since 6 am for practicum. I am just having a hard time getting through the class, even though it is a simple class. The only reason I am taking it is because I hear it may be useful to be LPC eligible, as this may make it easier to find clinical part time jobs while in a doctoral program. However, I really want to drop the class. I don't need the credits, and I could use the time to work on applications/other course work. If I drop the course, I will no longer be LPC eligible. Does this matter? Advice?

Many thanks!

There are 2 good reasons to have a cup of coffee and figure out how to enjoy the class:

1) Any kind of license eligibility can open doors for you, including in internships in states where they value that for billing purposes

2) A good grounding in life span developmental psychology is basic to good diagnosis. If you don't know the true range of normal and the expectable tasks and adaptive skills for sequential life stages you are at risk of over-pathologizing or mis-diagnosing. You also need to understand developmental psych in order to work effectively with Axis II disorders. Even if the instruction you are getting is not great, you can probably find a way to make the content worthwhile.

Yes! I'd go for the LPC if you can. Many graduates of doctoral programs get into the "post-doc trap" in which you need post-doc hours to get licensure and to get supervision hours you need a license. In other words, an LPC will give you a license under which you can work while getting post-doc hours. In my state, a new graduate can qualify for a temporary license while getting the post-Ph.D. hours. This is not the same for every state though.

thanks! you guys convinced me. i have a red bull and im sittin down with the material. lol although i am not happy about it...
