I am currently in a masters of counseling program and am planning on becoming licensed in the state of Arkansas after graduation. My husband and I will be doing a bit of moving around once he starts his optometry externships (about the same time I will be graduating with my MS) and I want to know if I can start my supervision hours (for AR licensure) in another state. I have not been able to find this on the AR licensure website and my professors say it depends on the state. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I think you should be okay, Elle. As long as your previous supervisor meets the same criteria that is required by Arkansas to be a licensed supervisor. If that's the case the hours will be transferrable. I might be running into the same problem, and most people have told me to check the individual state's supervising requirements. Hope that helps.

This is a cut and paste from ACA - so I am not sure how it will format... - probably not well - but I would be very careful about rmaking sure you are egistering your supervisor in Arkansas and making sure s/he was APPROVED to provide supervision in Arkansas and that they APPROVE your clinical setting in another state.

In Virginia - it is very difficult to get licensed if the hours are accrued in another state.

Alternatively, you could register your supervision and clinical setting in the state where you will be working prior to moving to Arkansas and hope that they would allow you to transfer the hours.

Hope this helps,

Thanks all for the responses. Sounds like I will probably need to contact Arkansas Counseling Association and find out exactly what the requirements are for transferring supervision hours. I appreciate your thoughts and advice!
