😕 This is my face right now.
I was bracing myself for grad school in the fall (here in the US) when I got accepted into LSHTM last week. I made plans to apply to London a few years ago when I started learning about public health (with plans to visit the John Snow pub and all) considering it like an intensive study abroad opportunity where I get a degree at the end. To my knowledge LSHTM is the best school for public health in the UK (perhaps worldwide?) so I lightheartedly applied knowing it is competitive and out of my league. The American university where I accepted my offer is a great school but not really one of the "best" (in terms of the rankings and what I have perceived in general). Nevertheless, it is a pretty good fit for me and I did get into a concentration of my liking.
SO I was wondering what you guys think? Is going to LSHTM a good/better idea? It'll be far (but I'd be moving across the country anyways), it'll be expensive (tuition is cheaper but cost of living is crazy high), and it'll be for a year (will be done sooner but with a super intense 12 mo). How to you think the MSc in Public Health from the UK will be compared to the American MPH? (*Note* I'm not really planning to later live and work in the UK, so I'm thinking of how will the international degree be viewed by American employers.) Also I'm hoping to get into public health practice not research or policy-- would LSHTM still be a good institute to learn a skill-set for that?
I would esp. appreciate any thoughts from American students (or if you know of anyone) who went to study public health in the UK (in particular to LSHTM). Thank you!!!
