LSU area

Definitely check out the French Quarter and Bourbon Street...there's always a ton of stuff going on even during the daytime. Canal St. has good shopping...as far as food, just walk around the French Quarter and there's like 3 restaurants per block, plenty to choose from. They are all different and obviously I haven't tried them all, but what I can recommend against is Cafe Maspero- horrible service. If you're into the tourist thing, go to Cafe du Monde, they are famous for their beignets (and they really are as good as they make them sound).

I wouldn't stray too far from the French Quarter, because there are some really shady parts of New Orleans..but really, the French Quarter is so huge that you'll be plenty entertained.

Hi,
I'll be checking out LSU with a friend this weekend. Are there any tips of where to eat or hang out in the New Orleans area? Thanks.

Like Victoria said, the French Quarter has a lot of cool stuff to do. You will definitely want to go to jackson square and the french market to walk around. There is a lot of cool artists who set up around there and plenty of interesting things to see. If youre looking for some really nice restaurants in that area you could try restaurant August (w/ chef John Besh), G.W. Fins, or Brennans to name a few. On the other hand, I would strongly recommend you visit uptown New Orleans, closer to Tulane. You could take the trolly from Lee circle in the French Quarter down St. Charles to the Tulane Campus (St. Charles is gorgeous). Across the street from Tulane is the famous Audubon Park and Zoo. You should also go to Magazine St. which has plenty to offer from shops, to restaurants, to bars. Some really nice uptown restaurants include: Commanders Palace ($$$), Jaquimos ($$), Dick and Jenny's ($$), Upperline ($$), and Lilette ($$). You cant go wrong with any of those.

Some cool bars uptown you may want to check out: the Bulldog (awesome beer bar), Miss Maes (really cheap & very local), F&M's, and St.Josephs.

One bar in the French Quarter I'd reccommend is Pat O's which has a really cool piano bar inside as well as the world famous Hurricanes.

Hope that helps and feel free to PM me if you want more info. 🙂

^ I was there last week. I really liked that, as above posts, lot of activity over there even weekdays in my last day I could go to a swamp tour( 2 hours for 23 dollars) really cool if you don't like snake and aligator forget that part

Hey, I have been living in New Orleans for a couple of years. Definitely check out the French quarter and Bourbon St. but be careful it gets kinda dangerous at night, just don't go wandering down some dark alleys and go with people if you can. I don't really like the French Quarter all that much, but it is an experience and there is some cool stuff there. Don't miss Jackson Square and Cafe du Monde for cafe/chicory and beignets. Mississippi River boat tours are pretty fun. This city is known for its food so I would definitely go to some good restaurants. My top choices are:

Jacques Imo's (Uptown, ~$30, very good southern style, try the alagator cheese cake)
Dick and Jenny's (Garden District, on Tchoupitoulas, ~$30 more American style food and calmer)
Mother's (Downtown, $10-20, Southern cafateria style)
Parasol's (Garden District, $10, awesome po-boys, a real dive)
Port of Call (French Quarter, $20, on esplanade, huge burgers, potatos, salads and drinks)

If you want to go all out, check out Commanders Palace, Emeril's Delmonico or Arnaud's, pricey but fancy and good!!!

If you have time, you should check out the Garden District, Magazine Street (tons of shops), Autubon Park (You can walk past the park and there is a zoo and if you walk past the zoo there is a place called the "Fly" and its on the Mississippi levee, its kina like a huge park right on the river), and Tulane and Loyola. For a more "local" night scene, go to Frenchman Street, this is where the Jazz clubs are. Wonder into Snug Harbor, DBA, and the Spotted Cat. Everynight there is a show. The street car is the best way to get around. I'm sure you can look up the lines via google. If you are going to get a car, you could check out the lower 9th ward to pay respects. Also, City Park is towards the lake, there is an art museum and a free sculpture garden. If you wander around City Park there is some cool stuff too.

I have not been to LSU's dental school, but from the freeway the LSU Health Sciences Center looks pretty new. I have a friend who's mom works at the dental school and rumers are that the dental school got rebult after the storm. I hear it is a wonderful NEW facility. LSU Dental addmissions is interesting, they still have the chalk carving test! Also I have a few friends that go to LSU and Tulane Med school and they all live uptown, it's pretty safe area and college oriented, so maybe check out that area.

I think I repeated some of what people said, but yea, have fun!!!

Thanks for the input everyone. We pretty much just stayed in the french quarter as there was a lot of stuff to do. Beignet's at Cafe du monde were excellent. unfortunately the big oyster restaurants were closed due to a power outage from road construction, but the other restaurants we saw with long lines were very good. We only did a day trip there, but will definetly be going back to check out the other areas and the nightlife.

If you are up for a trip go to Breaux Bridge next time . It is a little out of the way but give Cafe Des Amis a try. They have traditional Cajun cuisine and are absolutely amazing! That was my favorite place to go when I was down there for Mardi Gras or visiting the grandparents.

-Get beignets and chicory coffee at Cafe Du Monde, on Decatur street near Bourbon.
-Bourbon Street, go to Pat O'Brien's Piano Bar for Hurricanes, and Tropical Isle for Hand Grenades.
-Go to Frenchmen Street, there are great Jazz bars such as The Spotted Cat.
-If it's a Thursday, go to F&M's patio bar after midnight, get a beer and cheese fries.
-If it's Friday or Saturday, go to Ampersand or the Republic, nightclubs frequented by Shaq lol.
-If it's Sunday afternoon, go to the French Market on Decatur street, it's a nice flea market to buy cheap New Orleans masques and other items.
-Check out the Lower Ninth Ward, and see some of the relief work that is being done. Hell, I was there last week, and Brad Pitt was there! (didn't meet him though)

Jacquimo's is hand's down fantastic so I can vouch for that. You could get yourself a drive-thru margarita just for the novelty of it as well.

LSU dental was underwater I think up to the second floor. It flooded even the basement. They had just redone the first floor or lobby area. I have been there since they reopened and I have to say, I absolutely loved the facility.

You do have to do the chalk carving exercise, but they now have more information on their website than they did years ago. Overall, I really liked the school. I met with Dr. Weir when I was there and he is an awesome guy! Very friendly!

There is so much to do in NO, but definitely recommend Yo Mammas, its a burger place: AWESOME!!!👍
