LSU New Orleans

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I also recieved an acceptance letter from LSU-NO yesterday. I have not heard from Shreveport yet but my preference is NO. What is your preference?

I'm not sure! I've lived in New Orleans my whole life so I was originally only planning on applying to the NO program. I decided to apply to Shreveport on a whim and I actually liked the facilities and traditional curriculum better than New Orleans. Also, I like that they have an actual clinic where they see patients. But...I don't know if I could live in Shreveport for 3 years (or at least 2)! What about you? Why is New Orleans your first choice (aside from the fact that it's in New Orleans!)?

Yes, the clinic at Shreveport was very nice. The deciding factor of why I will be going to New Orleans is because its closer to home (I like to be with my family). Shreveport is about 4 hours from my home. However, I do think I would prefer a more traditional curriculum. So you haven't made your decision yet?

I'm leaning towards New Orleans for the same reason you mentioned-- to be close to my family! But if I get into Shreveport, it's definitely going to be a hard decision!

Dustyroadrunner, are you definitely going to Shreveport?

Maybe I will get something from Shreveport today. Did you all apply anywhere other than LSUHSC?

Yeah, I think we will probably hear today...I'm assuming you're in southern LA like me so that's probably why it took an extra day to get to us.

I didn't apply anywhere except LSU-NO and LSU-Shreveport. What about you?

Yeah, I am a good way further south than Shreveport. I also only applied to New Orleans and Shreveport.

Looks like I'll be going to New Orleans! I was selected as an alternate for Shreveport, but I'm going to go ahead and send my deposit to New Orleans!

Yes, I got put on Shreveport's alternate list as well.

Great choice. I'm a first year there now.. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. (and yes, it's tough 🙂)

Oh, we are actually trying to get a big sis/bro thing started so you guys will have someone to ask questions and chat with to help you all in your first year. I know that would've been super helpful for me.. Hopefully we can get it going for when y'all begin.

LSUhopeful would you mind giving us an idea of what the first summer is like?

hmm u sure you wanna know? 😉

Well, if things are the same, you'll be taking 3 courses. Anatomy (4 hours credit i think), Intro to Professional Practice (1 hour), and intro to Movement Sciences (1 hour).

Anatomy is the big one. I hope you have the same teachers we had (Dr. Venuti, she is great.. and also Rennie Jacobs, a fantastic OT). Anyways, you'll be in a large lecture room with all the first year DPTs and first year OTs (they'll be in their second semester though). You'll be in lecture everyday for 2 hours (8-10) and then lab for 2 hours (10-12).. 5 days a week. I'm not gonna lie, the first day is intimidating.. it's a bunch of new people and you basically learn ALL the systems (a quick overview) in the first 2 days.

Anatomy is broken into 3 blocks.. First is the thorax/abdomen, second is the Back and Arms, third is the pelvis and legs..

Lab is lab. Yes, it smells (and gets worse throughout the summer 🙂).. and everybody's nervous.. but the first week goes at a little slower pace than the rest so you'll learn the basics quick. You'll be randomly assigned to a tank with 3 other people. It is usually 2 OTs and 2 PTs.. I was actually at a tank with 3 OTs, but man we had a blast.. You'll Never forget your tank mates. The lab stays open all the time and it is highly recommended you stay after or go at other times to finish dissections and study the bodies. I didn't stay too much after but I bought "The Color Atlas of Anatomy" by Rohen that has real photos of dissections and that helped me a LOT. You take two tests at the end of each block: a written test, and a practical where things are tagged on the bodies and you have to walk around and basically just fill in the blanks.

The other classes you only take once a week (for 3 hours each i think). They're not too bad but get you introduced to some physical therapy basics. Obviously, you'll be spending most of your time with Anatomy. It's tough, but not too bad considering the light load you have in the summer. You'll think it's tough until you get to the Fall and Phys. 😀

Let me know if you have any other questions or specific things.. Good luck and congrats again!

ps. my advice: LEARN your anatomy and don't fall behind. You will use anatomy ALL the time in your next classes (and in your career) and it really helps to learn this stuff. So just put the effort in and it should be a piece of cake. AND be nice to the OTs. 😉 We are all in this together.

Thanks, that was great info. I'm excited to begin but it can be a little intimidating (moving to a new stage in life, the rigor of PT school, along with other things).

Oh, and just so you guys know.. we (LSUHSC-New Orleans) actually just re-opened the clinic on our floor to see patients again.. It had been closed due to financial reasons since Katrina. We're pretty excited to have a functioning clinic going again.

Thanks for all of that information about the first summer and about the clinic, LSUhopeful!

Any advice on where we should live? I live uptown right now, but my lease ends in May. Part of me wants to move back in with the parents to save money, but they drive me crazy. They suggested looking at the dorms so I would be close to everything, but I'm not sure I want to do college all over again! Any suggestions?

I would try to stay within 15 minutes of campus if possible. Your class will often do things outside of class and living further away will keep you from being able to hang out if you want to.. I actually commute from 50 minutes away and I've missed out on a ton of stuff, but I'm married too so i really don't need to be out partying anyway 🙂..

I would avoid the dorms, but the LSU Residence Hall is Very convenient (they're more like small apartments than dorms). About 8-10 people live there in my class and they are always studying and working out together. If I was single, I would be there.. it's cheap and has a lot of perks. Sure, it's small.. and old.. but for the price and convenience factor, you can't beat it. If you're going to school to learn, first and foremost, and don't care so much about a nice place.. it's probably your best bet. If you want to enjoy N.O. a bit more, stay in uptown.. it's a great area.. or maybe the warehouse district.. Places are just SO expensive. The residence hall is so cheap in comparison.

Best of luck.. hope that helps some..

Hi. I just got accepted into LSU New Orleans. I was wondering does anyone know about any scholarships or loan forgiveness.

I don't have much info on that.. I know I looked into scholarships at one point and they were non-existent for DPT students.

I know everyone who needed assistance in my class did receive it without any problems, but it's just one of those things DPT students have come to accept. Plan on coming out of school with a decent amount of debt that'll you'll have to re-pay.. 40-60K if I had to guess.. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news..

Hey everyone!

I sent in my deposit to LSU-NO a few weeks ago. Does anyone know how long it takes before we start receiving more information as far as class registration, orientation, etc...??

Thanks!

I've been accepted to the Audiology program. The Office of Student Affairs said that they don't even send emails out about registration until the end of June at the earliest 🙁. I'm feeling a bit impatient! I must know what is in store for me!!!! 🙂

Congrats LSUtigirl !

I believe the time is 1-2ish weeks until you will get more information 🙂

Cheers

Hi, I was looking to apply to LSUNO fall 2016. I really love the campus and would love attending their program. If you don't mind me asking, what all did you include on your PTCAS app. What did all your numbers look like (GRE, GPA, VOLUNTEER HOURS, OBSERVATIONAL HOURS, ETC). What do you think caught their attention for you to be chosen after your interview?
