I was living in New Orleans at the time of the hurricane--I was going to apply to LSU this fall, but had to change my plans. One of the reasons for this is the jump in the cost of living in Baton Rouge.

So many people in and around New Orleans have been forced to relocate--many have gone to Baton Rouge. That housing isn't going to be replaced in appreciable numbers for years. The traffic problems and housing crunch in BR aren't likely to improve anyime soon. The last local article I read a month or so ago said that vacancy rates for apartments there were less than 1%. This summer there were plenty of affordable apartments, but since the hurricane ads for places in our price range have been rare and they get snatched up immediately. I imagine a lot of crappy places that were Section 8 in August are now going to the highest bidder for twice as much as they were before...

I don't know how easy it is to get into LSU student housing, but I would look into it if I were you.

Wow. That's sobering. 😱

I had a feeling that BR would experience a huge influx of folks displaced by Katrina...

If you don't mind me asking, why didn't you apply to LSU-other than cost of living issues?

Well, the wait is gonna be long...for non-resident, non-contract applicants.

Probably won't hear until March 😱

It's all Katrina's fault---damn you, Katrina! 😡

I wonder how long state residents and contract applicants have to wait for an interview?

Well, truthfully it was mostly a cost of living issue. Right after the hurricane, it looked doubtful that either my husband or I would have jobs in the area. There were some personal reasons as well--we were unable to evacuate before the hurricane and it was a rather unhappy experience. And then staying in hotels and with relatives for months afterward in a state of limbo...

So we moved to Portland and I've put off applying to OSU for a year so I can qualify for resident tuition. It kills me to be set back a year and I have second thoughts all the time, but I still think we probably made the right decision. And I comfort myself with the thought that I never liked Baton Rouge anyway.

I would guess that LSU's timeline for LA residents has been set back quite a bit. My transcripts from New Orleans schools didn't even become available until long after the official application deadlines had passed.

Anyway, good luck! You might find the situation more workable than I.

Wow. I hear you on the waiting a year issue...you feel like you're wasting another year of your life trying to attain a goal.
