When doing rotations, is it better to bring your lunch or buy one at the hospital cafeteria? I'd prefer to bring my own so I can save a lot of money, but it seems like it would be better to buy it at the hospital due to time constraints.

I generally suck at bringing lunches but might make a greater attempt to do it if we didn't get free food at most of our hospitals. Hospital food sucks anyway, so you don't want to pay for it.

Doesn't really matter either way. Whatever you bring, make sure it has a decent shelf life, because there's always a chance that the fellow students/residents are going to want to go out and grab something together, in which case you may be bringing it home at the end of the day.

I chased free food (pharma or otherwise); if I failed, I used one of the cafeterias. Packing lunches took foresight, application of time, and an ability to eat room temperature food... I lacked most of those.

It is very rotation dependent at my school. You need to talk to the upperclassmen at your program and see what it's like.

For us, several rotations had noon conference with free lunch 3-5 days per week. On surgery on the other hand, much like WS jokes...I missed lunch as often as I got to eat it. When I did get to eat it was generally cramming down a cafeteria sandwich as quickly as possible.
