I would like to know how long the average medical student spends in class? You can then see how your school stands against the average. All M.D. MS-I and MS-II students, please participate. Thank you for your cooperation.

Are you asking how many hours are we supposed to be in, or are you asking how many hours we ATTEND? I don't know about evryone else, but those numbers are significantly different for me. It also varies depending which block we're in.

I think average hours the class is offered.

Also, if you post the info, please share which school it is. 🙂

O.K. I'll share. My days run anywhere from 3-8 hours. In my current block we don't have any more than 5 hours scheduled per day.

To the original poster: Are you able to change the poll settings? Those of us who haven't entered med school yet can't see the results without voting. If you can't change the settings, could you add an option that would allow us to vote so that the results could subsequently be viewed? Thanks . . .

It varies by what day of the week it is.

four hours of lecture EVERY morning (except exam mornings).

Afternoons vary by what classes or labs you have. First semester, maybe 1-4 hours in the afternoon every afternoon. Second semester, afternoons free 2 days, ~3 hours class 2 days, then the other day varied 0-3 hours depending on the week. Most afternoons second semester are labs or discussions, with an occasional hour-long lecture thrown in.

Just to give people an update who are curious because you have to vote to see the results...as of right now....with about 57 people that have voted...

35% - 5 Hours
23% - 4 Hours
19% - 6 Hours
followed by 3 hours and 8 hours with 9%
and 7 hours with 5%

Thanks everyone for posting....

During the first two years, our class hours varied from 3-8 per day, like most of the others. It depended on the block and the day of the week. There were more class hours during the second year.

HOwever, by the second year, class attendance was less than 20%. This is something that I don't think most applicants realize...that at many schools, the majority of students don't attend every class. Everyone has their own learning style, and many people skip class to study on their own.

Hours vary GREATLY in the 3rd and 4th years. Depends on your rotation and the expectations of students at your school. At my school, students are expected to see their patients and have a note written before the intern gets to the patient. We also take overnight call and usually work a full day post call. So, depending on the service, I have arrived at the hospital as early as 4:00 am (and to think I used to think an 8:00am class was early!) and stay til 8 pm (this was the longest non-call day hours I had)
