There are a couple of elective courses I'm interested in at my school. Deadline to sign up for either these is approaching. Are these courses worth the time commitment? For those who have taken an elective first year, was it too much or not?

What does an elective 1st year even mean? Is it required to do one, or is the alternative to have more free time?

If there’s something you’re really interested in and think you can manage the extra time, then sure why not. Only you can really answer whether it’s worth the committment.

M1 electives??? That's funny. Stop trying so hard to be cool.

The only M1 or M2 electives that you should be thinking off are research 1, research 2, research 3, and research 4 if you have that much free time.

At my school pre-clinical electives are super chill - they are not for credit but you do get a little thing on your transcript, and if you fail or stop going it just doesn't show up so there's really no pressure.

I did a neurosurgery elective and it was pretty much "we'll feed you guys pizza once a week if you wanna come hang out and talk about cases, or follow us around in clinic/OR/etc." It was a good way to get early exposure to the field, and figure out that NS wasn't really my jam...

I say ask the upperclassmen what the time commitment is like, and go for it if you're interested.

Not required, but extra. Maybe 20-40 hours total. They seem easy, but are graded P/F, so showing up would be important

I think they would fall in this category. One is essentially an epidemiology course, and it sounds like a nice and not terribly difficult break in my schedule. But then again, it's time i would otherwise have free

If you're really wanting to spend 40 hours of your semester learning about epidemiology, get involved in a clinical research project - you'll learn more and you're likely to actually come out of the experience with something meaningful to show for your time.
