I noticed everyone recommends Lippincott for Biochem... but mainly for the pictures. Does anyone have any recommendations for a real medical reference text for biochem? What do you think of Marks?

How about the same for physiology? A real good reference text? Guyton and Hall I've heard is a good one... any opinions?

Last... I've already decided to do the popular Netter and Rohen combo for Anatomy. What about a clinical text? Is it essential to get something like Moore's?

Thanks for all of your help!

I like Marks for biochem. It is a good read.

Guyton and Hall is also excellent for physio. Berne and Levy is way too dense.

For anatomy, I would recommend Mini-Moore if you have to have some text. Big Moore is too dense but will make an excellent reference book later on. I hate Netter's. Look through the different atlases and see which ones you like best. Rohen is a good investment as is Moses.

For neuroanatomy, I would suggest Blumenfeld.

For physical diagnosis, either Mosby or Bates.

I would wait until you see your course syllabi. For instance I had no need to purchase a physiology or pharmacology text because those syllabi were well written and complete.

Netter is overrated as an illustrated atlas and generally recommended by people who have only compared it to Grant's (which I agree is worse). Go to the bookstore and evaluate different atlases before you purchase.

Netter seems to be taking a beating on this thread...For what it's worth, I think it's worth having...

Netter may be overrated, but tends to be used not because of its comparison with Grants, but because most people can get it for free with a credit card application, club membership or the like at their school. Free is always the best in med school, as in life. 🙂 Bear in mind that lecturers may predominantly pull their slides from one or another atlas, and so you may decide you want to study from the same one or a different one, and make your purchases accordingly. It sometimes pays for different members in the same study group to have different atlases so you can share (if you are the sharing or study group type).

Thankfully I haven't purchased Netter's yet. If Netter's isn't very good, what are some better ones to look at? I've heard that Sobotta is pretty good? It's almost 200 bucks though... I think Lord Jeebus is the one who recommended it in another thread. Anyone else have some opinions on Sobotta?

There are two choices -- artistic renderings (Netters, Grants, Grays), and photographic renderings (Rohans, McMinns). It doesn't really matter which one or ones you use, the body is the same in all. It's a matter of personal preference. But as I suggested above, Netters will likely be offered as a freebie in some fashion.

Yeah I recommended Sobotta but it is really expensive (I somehow got it for next to nothing on ebay) and may not be worth the additional cost. You can probably get away with using a library copy since most med students don't know about it (and won't recall it). Also if you have this money to spend you could look into the Thieme atlas (3 volumes, only 1 released so far) which looks awesome.

I like the cheaper Clemente atlas (it uses Sobotta plates but not the full set) and I think you should compare it to Netter before purchasing either.

If you're going to join AMSA you may as well get the free Netter's, but I don't see many benefits to joining AMSA unless you think you're going to be an active member. The cost of joining is similar to the cost of Netter, so it's only free if AMSA membership is worth $60 to you. For me it was not.

Bottom line: go comparison shopping before you buy.
