hello, I am an M3 in my first rotation. I have been interested in EM since working as a scribe pre-Med school and maintained that interest while shadowing my first two years/doing research. I do not have a third year EM rotation or elective. I did well on step (high 240s), but I'm not sure what else I can do to add to my application. I go to Philly school and want to stay in the Philly area for residency. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you

If you don't have any third year electives then there's nothing you can do this year besides do well on your rotations and be a pleasant person to work with. When it comes to planning your fourth year schedule make sure the first 2-3 months are emergency rotations with the first preferably at your home institution. If you'd like to stay in Philly you could do the second rotation at another of the area programs but it may be wise to extend your radius a bit.

Number 1 would be to be on VSAS/VSLO early so you can apply for rotations in your desired area right when they open.

Could also consider trying to get to know someone in EM at your school so you can possibly get a LOR as some away rotations require LORs.

Thanks for the tips. I know some faculty in my home program but i won't be at the hospital this year. I'll try and figure something out
