So I'm looking at matriculating within the coming couple of months. I've always been a PC -- haven't used a Mac since the colored-shell CRT all-in-ones from yesteryear (G3, was it? I forget the model).

The iMac is irresistibly sexy, and I like that Snow Leopard is around the corner. I'm nerdy in the sense that I'll dual-boot a Linux distro for grins, so I don't suspect switching over to OS X would be terrible (especially with it being built on Unix), but I guess I don't know that this is the best time to do that.

Currently posting from a Sony Vaio Z notebook which is within its return window, and I know that new MacBook Pros were just released through WWDC.

My understanding is that my school asks for tablet PCs, but that a computer is only needed for testing -- and that some people are using Macs with no problems whatsoever.

What say you folks?

That colored G3 you had was the first iMac. 🙂

Are you looking at purchasing an iMac or a Macbook (Pro)? The low end Macbook Pros are actually Macbooks but it seems Apple likes to confuse the issue a bit. The iMacs are cheaper and faster CPU-wise, but obviously you lose out on the portability factor.

In my opinion the $1099 "MBP" with education discount, plus iPod Touch, plus printer is an amazon deal though you can't really go wrong with any of the machines.

Honestly, both would be possible. I love having a giant display at home, but I realize that med school will require a laptop. Cost-prohibitive, though...
