So, I'm sure some of you grizzled attendings and residents will laugh at my pre-med eagerness (and rightfully so), but I was finally able to shadow an anesthesiologist today and thought I'd share that I really enjoyed myself. I now finally know what a Mac vs. a Miller blade is, I got to check out some dude's vocal cords first hand (not handling the Miller though), got to see some regional blocks, and even pushed my first syringe of Propofol. It was definitely my most enjoyable shadowing experience so far (and I've had more than a few), and all the attendings and residents were laid back and a blast to hang out with.
The main point of the thread is to just give a huge thanks to everyone here for raising my awareness of anesthesiology in general. Without the board, I never would have even thought of the specialty, but I'm really glad I found the board and read through the invaluable posts about clinical issues, work environment, and general lifestyle of the specialty. It's definitely made me a believer. I've got a long road before I choose a specialty (~5 years...), so it's horribly premature to say "I've decided", but so far anesthesiology is topping the list of possibilities. Thanks to all.
I was in an outpatient surg center today and hit the main OR tomorrow with the same attending. Looking forward to it.
