I have an awful undergrad GPA. Thought I would improve my chance to get into med school by doing an MPH. I'm halfway through the semester and taking a behavioral sciences course that I will probably flunk. I like my other courses though. I have no interest in writing-intensive courses, I think academia and all that jazz is a waste of time. I think I have made a mistake because the MPH is very writing-intensive...and useless.

Do I drop out? How will this affect med school chances? Will this affect an application to a DO school for example?

Thanks for listening.

It'd be helpful if you posted your GPA

Definitely would recommend some type of SMP program where you can show a 1-2 year record of academic success (3.7+ ideally). Take the MCAT some time during then and work on those ECs

Waitttt, academia is a waste of time? What do you think medical school is?

Yes, it will all affect med school chances. You have sub-optimal GPAs to start, but you'd have to say why you left your MPH program and your explanation, frankly, is a bad one.

Thanks guys. I, of course, am also considering alternative careers in the health field. But I'm thinking public health is just not interesting enough that I'd want to do it the rest of my life.

Med schools like writing intensive courses. Can you just drop the one class and keep the rest if you like them?

I feel like you should just suck it up and stick it out. The MPH is not useless, even if you don't want to go into public health, if you earn a decent GPA while you're doing it. It will at least give you an upward trend. I absolutely would not drop out with the GPAs you've posted.

Yeah I think I'll just drop the class I'm doing poorly in, it's a core class so I'll have to retake it next fall. I'm not sure why I took it in the first place as it's considered an upper course in my program.
