More talk about Magic Mushrooms. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16678322

Here's a short excerpt from this article on BBC news:

"Prof Nutt and his team scanned the brains of volunteers who had been injected with a moderate dose of psilocybin, the active ingredient of magic mushrooms.
They had expected higher activity in areas of the brain associated with visual imagery. But in fact they found that the drug switched off a network of interconnected regions of the brain which regulated an individual's sense of being and integration with their environment. The researchers say that this alters consciousness because individuals are less in touch with their sensations and normal way of thinking. Medical role? They also found that psilocybin also turns off a part of the brain which is overactive in some forms of depression. So Prof Nutt believes that the drug could be used as an antidepressant and has applied to the Medical Research Council to carry out a small patient study to see if this is the case."

Thought I'd post this to see if anybody else liked this professor's last name. Also if anybody has any thoughts about using mushrooms for depression.

Look into Stanislav Grof. LSD was experimented with for many years.

The UK's chief drugs adviser has been sacked by Home Secretary Alan Johnson, after criticising government policies. Professor David Nutt, head of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, criticised the decision to reclassify cannabis to Class B from C.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

In the UK it is known as the Nutt sack incident, where being fired is referred to as getting the sack.

He also said that smoking dope was less dangerous than riding a horse, which is true but its not the sort of thing that goes down well with government ministers.

No he said that taking MDMA was less dangerous than horse riding. I am not a big fan of him, he comes out as this champion of 'science' but he is filthy with drug company money.

That's true as long as the MDMA is chemically pure.

I know people in the substance use world are proposing trials of ketamine and pilosybin for substance abuse and depression. I think the more fruitful direction is to figure out the mechanism of action and then leverage that for new drug development.

Also, be very wary of the blobs on the brain type of fMRI experiments. Most of them are completely meaningless.
