I am going to be a sophmore in the fall. However, I am behind on my classes. First semester I took no sciences. I am taking Bio 2 now, but I still need Bio 1 and Chem 1 and 2. I couldn't take Chem 2 because of the sequencing. I was planning on taking Chem 1 and 2 over the summer, then taking OChem and Bio 1 in the fall.

HOWEVER, BIO1 and OCHEM1 are scheduled for the same time! That totally screws people like me and people that need to re-take Bio1(I know a good amount do).

I was planning on doing that, getting caught up, studying abroad in the spring, then taking OChem 2 if I need to in the next summer. But now, I don't know what I should do, because this totally screwed it all up for me.

Any advice or suggestions or comments?

if ypu've already had (and done well in) bio 2, there's no reason they would keep you from registering for an upper level bio. you need a couple of them for med school, so take genetics or micro or cell phys or something. just pick one you feel fairly passionate about that you think you can rock to offset the possible lower grade in ochem.

Yeah I was thinking about taking microbiology or anatomy.

Should I then take Bio 1 the following summer?

I am also taking Bio1 (Lab) and Ochem1 (no lab; UF has one Ochem lab that is 2 credits for Ochem2) in the fall. However, I am taking two easy classes with them that will take virtually no work. So it will be like taking two classes in the fall... It will still be difficult, but I think it will be do-able.

If you are thinking about doing this just take two easy classes with them, and make sure you do well in biology and organic chemistry. In the spring I'm taking Bio2 (lab) and Ochem2 (lab). But again. I will only be taking one more class. That means only three classes in the spring. Just do what you think you can handle. If you are taking two heavy classes in a semester make sure you don't add on 2 more difficult classes. If you are worried about credits than just take some summer courses to even out the credits you lost during the fall and spring.

I can't take Bio1 and OChem though because they're at the same time.

That is a good idea though, taking two easier classes. But the problem is that they are both the same times.

If you are worried about not finishing the pre-reqs for applying, then it's OK, since as long as you finish them before med school starts, it'll be fine. If you are worried about content for MCAT, it's also ok because you don't really need those upper class materials for the exam. Just take whatever your schedule fits you, and taking 1 or 2 classes in the summer won't hurt you.

Got you. Well than try takin bio and physics? I don't know. It should all be ok though.

Do they have evening courses at your school? Many colleges also offer bio at night, which you would need special permission to get into/get signed in. Then you could take Ochem during the day. But, you should probably speak to your advisor before you do anything else.

Can you take one of the classes at a near by school?

Don't be in such a rush to get your classes done. Enjoy your undergrad years.

I am not. But I was under the understanding you needed the basics(Bio I and II, Chem I and II, OChem I and II, Physics) by the time you take the MCAT.

Yes, you really should take them first, since the test is based on those subjects. It's easier to study for the test if you've taken the subjects first.

I hate it when schools put necessary classes into conflicting schedules. It seems like ochem II & physics II are always like that here. 😡 I'll wind up taking the ochem II first, just to keep the continuum going from the first class. Then fit in the physics whenever it works down the road. Ours offers so many bio I & II classes, though, that you can fit those in anytime.

This is some good advice. Skim them and decide on what you can learn on your own with good knowledge and take a class to catch up on the things you didn't get

First of all, I don't understand why they let people take second part of the course w/out having taken the first part, cause first part introduces you to the major concepts underlying everything else in bio. I'm sure you knew your stuff in HS so you didn't have a problem. But prerequisites are prerequisites for a reason. Secondly, unless you go to a tiny school I'm sure there is more than one section of Orgo and definitely more than 1 section of Bio1 available in Fall.

You should have them done for the MCAT, but there's no time limit for taking the MCAT. Just take it when you're finished with those classes.
