As for the TX schools, I'd put 'em like this.

UTMB/UTSW (depending on what kind of atmosphere you prefer--laid-back great program or hard-core great program)
UT-Houston
UTSA
Scott & White
Tech

Don't know enough about the AZ schools, and am unsure as to the future of the NO schools. LSU's pretty solid from what I hear, and I know that Oschner is doing some deal with Tulane for some of its departments--don't know about medicine.

So I guess it's a half list--but I'd still put Texas schools at the top!

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the reply...can I ask for some rationale on the way you ranked the TX programs? Noticed you put the bigger programs 1st.

I can't help you rank as I'm MSI but if you have any questions on Lubbock since I'm at TTU I'd be happy to help.

UMC (the hospital) and TTU have a pretty good relationship. No financial worries from that aspect, UMC is a county hospital actually making money. Most TTU residents get good hands on experience from what I've heard with procedures et cetera and quite a bit of autonomy in comparison to other programs ... I can't speak specifically about this being the case for the TTU IM program.

At TTU, I know IM here seems ok, they have Lynn Bickley the editor of the Bates physical exam book. She probably has good contacts for fellowships.

As far as fellowships, they have a great physical facility for their cardiology people. There are two FMG's cards fellows so i'm not sure how that comments on their selectivity.

Advantages of Lubbock:

1) No traffic
2) Great place to have a family.
3) Safe.
4) Friendly, rugged people with good values.

Disadvantages:

1) Flat
2) Little cuture
3) A long way from big city
4) Not much "outdoors" stuff ... mountain biking, hiking, et cetera.

An Ad/Dis depending on you personally:

1) Very very conservative (republican)
2) Very religious
3) Very anti-abortion ... the med school couldn't even find an ob-gyn to come and discuss the procedure with the class.
