It's a requirement by many schools to have a DO write your letter of reference instead of an MD. I'm hoping someone can help out with a little problem I am having on that one.
I really don't know any DOs (knew one, but have no idea where he is now or how to reach him) and I am currently stuck in Iraq... not exactly a great place to track one down. I'll be here until it's time to apply, so there is no way to track one down and meet with/shadow someone once I get back home. I seem to remember seeing a thread somewhere that linked to a "DO mentorship" website where you can reach out to DO mentors through email and phone... anybody know if something like that might work? I saw a lot of their mentors contact was by phone or email only so theoretically I can contact one of them and exchange information for a few weeks and learn some from them at a distance, but is this the type of thing someone can do to get a LOR from them? If not does anyone have any other ideas? If anyone has an idea about that DO mentorship link (if something like that will work) it would be greatly appreciated if you can point me in the right direction... 🙂

Well, being in Iraq does place you in a bind. Do you have an MD letter? There are also many schools that don't specifically require a DO letter or will accept a letter from an MD. I didn't have a DO letter and I did fine in the application process. For example, I am fairly sure that KCUMB and COMP don't require a DO letter, since I got in to both w/o one. Things may have changed, though, so check the AACOM college guidebook for more specific requirements.

Yes, I have access to an MD that will write a letter for me in our medical director for the company who is an MD. I'd like to find a way to get a DO letter simply so I am able to apply more broadly since my stats a a little below par, plus I think that knowing a DO will help come interview time when the "What do you know about DO's" or the "Why haven't you shadowed a DO" type questions comes. Being a little below average on paper I want to make sure that I have as strong of an application package as I can with things I "might" be able to control. Thanks for the help though, I appreciate it 🙂

Hmm... You probably already thought of this, but would it be feasible for you, through your contacts, get in touch with one at the local CSH unit or something? I don't know how possible it is, given the situation, but it might be something to consider.

I know a few DO's in Iraq. No I am not kidding. Lots of military docs are DO's. Talk to the people at the hospital.

Hmm... well we don't have a CSH here at the camp I'm at but we do have a TMC and there are a couple of docs there, although I do not know if they are DO or MD. I actually have to go over that way pretty soon, so I'll ask around... thanks guys, good idea 😎

If they aren't DO's, they will know someone who is. Guaranteed.

This thread topic made me think of getting specialty contact lenses with one saying D and one saying O

That would be sweet. I want them now.

How would you make sure that the "D" contact is upright?

Besides, if you put them on in the mirror you could accidentally have them read "OD". 😀

Hmmm good point. I should just stick with my original plan of tattoing A.T Still's face on my arm. The beard is at least six inches long.

Its so gangsta. Trust me, it'll get you out of any scuffle and in any club. Chicks will be hanging off of you in no time.
