I am trying to make reservations to have my household goods shipped and am finding it very expensive. I am confused with those who charge by cubic feet and lbs and distance etc. I didn't expect it to be as expensive as it is. I estimated around 1400 dollars but the quotes I am getting are like 2500-3000 dollars. Can anyone recommend some good companies for a reasonable price.
Thanks in advance.

Uhaul is fairly cheap. Shipping is fairly expensive, unless you're moving a whole truckload of furniture, in which case it's still pricy, but far less per cubic foot or pound. I know there are plenty of moving threads in the General Residency Forum, try searching for them and you'll find recommended movers.

Another option is to find someone else who's making a similar move, and sharing the cost of a truck. If you can coordinate with someone in your class that is also moving from your area, you can save some money and make a new bud along the way. If you can't find someone from your class, I'd try searching craigslist:

www.craigslist.org.

There are local craigslist sites for a bunch of cities now.

Good luck!

UHAUL!
need i say more...u know u want a big ole diesel truck and a truckers hat to top it off TOOT TOOT

Someone suggested this to me, although I haven't used it....yet. The website has a good way to estimate your square footage. Basically you pack up the truck and they drive. Chicago to Philly is around $1100 and I have stuff to pretty much fill a one-bedroom.

My friends just used UPack to move from Oakland to Portland, OR and had a good experience. I helped them out and it was pretty easy as long as you estimate enough space for your stuff.

I'd recommend against U-haul. Do a Ryders or Budget if you want to diy, but my experience with uhaul vehicles has been less than stellar.

I love Student Doc Net. I called UPack and it is so cheap. UHaul wanted 700 to 1000 plus gas and extra mileage just for a small unit pulled by your car. Upack is charging $695 which includes taxes and fuel to drive my stuff from NJ to Cleveland. NOT BAD. I can buy stuff at home and have it when I get there. This is for a truck that will hold 1BR apt. worth of stuff. Sounds like enough room. All I need is a couch, bdr set, a few appliances, tables etc. I'll make it fit for such a cheap price. Thanks you guys!! (Besides who wants to DRIVE aUhaul anyways.)

Hey Kyauna,
Also, keep in mind that there's an Ikea in Pittsburgh, which isn't too far from Cleveland. (2 hours maybe?) Their prices are pretty good, they all come in flat boxes, are easy to assemble, and the stuff is not bad looking.
Have you found a place yet?

It may be a good idea to go with a reputable company like Mayflower because independent companies have been known to do dodgy things such as hold your stuff for hostage (demanding more money), stealing valuable things like TVs or DVDs, refusing to unload the truck unless you meet their demands. I believe 20/20 or Dateline did a story on some of the "internet" moving companies and this poor woman was left without any of her posessions for 3-4 months because she refused to pay an extra $1000 or so. The movers refused to unload the truck and then drove off with her stuff. As I recall, she battled them in the courts and eventually won but it's very inconvenient to live in an empty house for so long especially if you're going to have to adjust to so many new things at school. Either do it yourself with U-Haul or bite the bullet and go with a national company with good reputation. Good luck.
