Why is it that male OB's need a female in the room and a male RN (such as in L&D) does not?

I have been reading through the threads and I have to say that I am a bit annoyed with all the males whining about how they are perceived as pervs., it will take them longer to examine a woman because they need a female nurse around, blah blah blah...

I just came from reading a nursing forum where men love working OB, when a woman is in labor they don't have a female standing around and quite frankly, the only females with attitudes are the nurses where they seem to have the attitude that men in L&D are in the way and out of place.

If you are male and wanting to go into OB/GYN, DO IT! The females I know that prefer a female doc are few and far between. If you really pay attention you will realize it is the NURSES that have a problem with men, not the patients.

If you provide quality care, if you show your patient that you care about her overall well being, if you are open to questions, if you are honest in your answers... you'll be fine. Sure, there are patients that prefer female docs. But they are not the norm, at least not from my 20+ years of experience as a nurse.

What about rape victims? Who is more outraged about the attack? A female doc or a male? Men are more protective of woman, okay... maybe I am old and outdated but this has been my experience.

No honest doctor is a perv for wanting to go into OB and or OB/GYN. If you care about your patients, the rest will fall into place. Women want to know that their doc cares about them as a person and a patient. If you show the above everything will be fine. I know LOTS of docs, both male and female. The winners are the ones that give a crap. The losers are egotistical and they don't care about anything but themselves. They listen to everyone except their patients.

If you don't think the good nurses know what they are talking about, you are fooling yourselves. Nurses will save your back side, if you are worth saving.

Your post is a little contradictory to me. First you say its only the nurses with the problem

If you really pay attention you will realize it is the NURSES that have a problem with men, not the patients.

and then your closing

If you're talking about the site I think you're talking about...I don't see where you get the fact that the majority of nurses feel males don't belong in OB? In fact it seems to me the nurses there couldn't care any less if the men are in OB or not. Maybe you were at a different website. This particular website is the best site so sorry if I assumed wrong.

As a student nurse I can tell you I haven't encountered a single nurse in all 4 hospitals that don't like men in OB but you as a nurse have. This baffles me. 😕 Unless they all live in the States? 😀

Good nurses doesn't imply all nurses.
