Hi,

Just a question about malpractice coverage for those of us looking to moonlight. Do most residents moonlighting buy their own or does the hospital/clinic provide it. I am not sure if I'll have to buy, but if do, where do I begin looking? Thanks.

Most hospitals should provide your malpractice coverage. It should be built into any contract you sign. For example, the place in my residency where we were allowed to moonlight would pay an hourly rate, but in the contract they would pay us an extra $20 per hour, then subtract $20 per hour for malpractice.

Make sure if they do provide malpractice insurance that it includes a tail. Otherwise, a significant portion of your profit may disappear when you stop working at that hospital and have to buy a tail policy.

If you are moonlighting with a physician group, usually they will provide it; if through an agency, they will. Some hospitals in some parts of the country may employ physicians directly, in which case they will. I would be surprised if any hospital would credential someone who didn't have a policy, and more frequently I think they are looking at the quality of the policy.

Good point about the tail.
