i'm having such a hard time coming up with what to write for these essays! the group I one wasn't so bad, but in group II i dont think i have anything decent to write for any of them. i really need to get the creative juices flowing somehow.... 😕

what were the essays about? you got my curiosity flowing

theres 2 groups, and you have to answer one question from each group, no longer than one typed page:

Group I:
A. Describe a noteowrthy experience that you have had with others from diverse backgrounds and what you learned from that experience.
B. Discuss the concept of cultural diversity and how you believe it is relevant to the practice of medicine.
C. What personal challenges do you anticipate if you undertake training at an urban medical school?

Group II:
A. What individual (excluding family members) has had the most influence on your life and why?
B> Describe your toughest challenge in life thus far and how you handled it.
C. What has been the most significant event or accomplishment in your life and why?

For group I i did B, which wasn't so bad, but for group II I have no idea what I'm gonna do....I'm thinkin either B or C, but having a hard time coming up with what to write about.

Did they change my favorite part about that question from last year? Because before they said "others from diverse backgrounds (people with backgrounds different from yours)". Just in case you were confused. 😛

Haha, actually it did still say that....but I felt kinda silly writing that part, so I left it out 😎

Did you get the Wayne State secondary by e-mail? I haven't heard anything from them, but I'm out of state.

I got it yesterday, snail mail...but I live in Ann Arbor, which is like half an hour away from Detroit. So I imagine it might take the mail a bit longer to make it out to Cali....you'll probabaly get it early next week 🙂

That was one of the sketchiest secondaries I've seen... mine was folded all crooked.

They're pretty picky though... I seem to remember only 1/3 of applicants get secondaries. Congrats all!

Thank you! BTW, I am jealous that you live in Ann Arbor. 😍 Eat a Zingerman's sandwich for me, okay? 😉

Don't be to jealous, it gets COOOOLD here, I'd rather be in Cali. Mmmmm, Zingermans, their bread is so good! 😛

Oh God, I just moved out of state. Stop tempting me with that Zingerman's talk... I'm sure I could find something good here in Milwaukee, but that requires effort. 🙁

ok, so i 🙁 suck 🙁 at life and am a reapplicant.

anyways, last year when i applied to wayne (super super late, i might add), i didn't try to think of one particular life-altering moment. i thought of some experiences i've had that were meaningful and helped me to develop character and other personal qualities that i feel will enable me to be a good physician.

lemme see...is there one person (like a mentor, advisor) who encouradge you to follow a dream that seemed unreachable? or was there something you participated in that taught you patience, compassion, other qualities? or have you been close to someone who has died of cancer or another terminal illness - what have you learned from that?

just some ideas...hope it at least gets your thoughts going

🙄 rae 🙄

Ack, I'm struggling with group II as well. I haven't had too many challenges that I would like to bring up to the committee. I have a few, but I'm afraid that bringing them up will hurt me in the app process. I have several academic accomplishments, but nothing too spectacular. So, that leave the individual influence question... Hmm, I may have definitely had some influential people in my life, but the most influence was definitely from several family members (I can't write about that unfortunately).

I ended up just writing about when I was in highschool having to pick where to go to college was a very tough decision for me, because my little sister had brain cancer and had surgery to remove the tumor right around when I was deciding where to go.....the challenging part for me was both dealing with her sickness and picking where to go because I got accepting to my dreamschool (out of state) but also an excellent in-state backup (UMich). I basically went about writing the essay by analyzing my feelings at the time and talking about how I coped with the problem. Apparently it wasn't totally awful, because they already offered me an interview 🙂
Good luck!!

eh, it's not so bad. i've lived in the area most of my life.

Hehe, I've lived in Flint for most of my life. So Detriot doesn't seem that bad too me. Writing this essay, however, is quite a pain.

You think the secondary sucks, try living in Detroit for 4 years.
We let people like you think that, so we can keep all the cool Detroit things to ourselves. Living in Detroit has been a blast.

Anyways, ambrosia, just go with Group II A and BS and exagerate a little if you have to. They aren't going to say, "nope you're wrong. that person couldn't have had that impact."

And yeah, if you got a secondary you are in good shape, a lot of people get cut before that point.

for IIb could i write about my episode with depression?
