Hi,

DO students do you feel that you need to have good physical/kinesthetic skills to perform OMT? I consider myself to be somewhat of a weakling and I want to know if this is going to hinder my ability to perform OMT, do well in DO school and as a potential future DO. Please comment on this.

In addition, I had a question regarding residencies. I am a pre-med so I am not yet aware of everything. I know that as a DO student you can take the COMPLEX and/or USMLE boards, which can open various doors for you in regards to residencies. Do all residencies accept only one type of board exam or do many accept two? Is one considered more competitive than the other exam?

What about fellowships? I know I am only pre-med but so many fellowships look interesting to me. I want to go into primary care and am interested in doing a general medicine/primary care fellowship after residency or later in life. Are fellowships based on your boards too?

How does one decide which boards to take? I know that they are really expensive too. Are board exams covered in your medical school tuition?

Thank you for all your help.

Best,

Verónica

first off, wrong forum. second, DO students are required to take the COMLEX (not complex) in order to graduate. MD students are required to take the USMLE. DO students can take the USMLE if they want. If you are applying for residencies, DO students can apply to DO or MD residencies. If you are applying to DO, you just need the COMLEX. If you are applying to MD residencies, they use the USMLE. Some MD residencies know the average of DO scores so you don't have to take the USMLE, but a general rule of them is that if you want to apply ACGME, you have to take the USMLE. And don't worry about fellowships at this point. They are based on a lot of things but primarily your actions in residency. And board exams aren't "covered" but the cost attendance that you can receive each year will include your board exams, so you get enough money to pay for it.

complex? I think thats what some people on SDN have, lol. if you interview at a DO school though, def do not tell them you're going to ace the COMPLEX, lol

i think zoner is a girl

also i dont think you have to be strong to perform OMM. Ive seen many petite females doing it and they seemed to be doing pretty well.

If it helps, you don't have to come into med school being good with motor-type skills and lots of muscle to do OMM. They will train you. Trust me, I'm MUCH MUCH MUCH better at this than the very first week. Don't fret.

As for COMLEX/USMLE, many DO's take both COMLEX and USMLE. You can go check out the exciting news that ACGME & AOA are all combining into a single residency-program starting July 2015. You should be able to Google that and it come up. Very cool stuff 🙂

Best of luck!
