Mannitol (5%) effect on ECF?

What is the effect of Mannitol (5%), osmolality similar to plasma, on ECF?
According to its MOA, ECF will increase because of the shift, hence it's contraindicated in pulmonary edema. Goljan states in his book that both ECF and ICF will decrease by mannitol.

Maybe in the immediate ECF will rise, but it's property as a diuretic results in a drop of TBW.

I agree. Doesn't it increase ECF when it's initially administered but cause a fluid loss over time as it's filtered?
