I’ve used the SDN forums in the past to promote my own residency program and I thank everyone for indulging me. Now I’d like to shift the spotlight to Marianjoy in Wheaton, IL, where I am currently rotating.

Let’s be frank, previous comments on SDN haven’t been very kind to this stand-alone rehab hospital 30min outside of Chicago. I think, however, that some of these posts must have been written prior to the major overhaul I’ve been able to witness first as a med student and now as a visiting resident. These days, Marianjoy is movin' on up.

For starters, the newly renovated hospital is a palace. The designers incorporated nature into each room of the building and nearly every patient has a beautiful view of its pristine landscape. There are meditation rooms, stain glass windows in the chapel, a central garden with patio furniture, and a large labyrinth to create “sacred space.” The therapy rooms are large and plentiful, too.

The ancillary staff is also top notch. I’m on the brain injury unit right now and these nurses are on top of everything. They truly care about these patients and as a testament to that we frequently have previous patients return to say thanks to them.

As for the training aspect, the patient load is not lacking. In-patient has always been strength of the program, but in recent years the out-patient aspect has started to take off. A big plus for the program has been the addition of Dr. Sachin Mehta who is a recent graduate and is very enthusiastic about teaching residents. He is also a bounty for procedures. On any given day he invites me to perform phenol blocks, CMGs, and spine injections in the out-patient clinic with him. Again, Marianjoy is very lucky to have him. Dr. Keen, who is renown across the nation (perhaps world?) for her pediatric physiatry skills, is also an attending here.

Finally, Dr. Rao is the program director and he cares about this place as though he birthed it himself.

So there you go, that’s my shout-out for what some people call ‘The ‘Joy.’

I did a rotation at Marionjoy during med school (many, many years ago). It keeps a good reputation in the Chicago community.

Dr. Keen was great to work with even back then, (I sent my niece with CP to see her) and Dr. Rao an excellent teacher.

I interviewed there and thought it was great. it was high on my list but not that high because of the weather.
