Hi,

My husband is one year ahead of me and is planning on applying to orthopedic surgery. He has good board scores (240+), research and LORs. I am really interested in dermatology and my stats are similar to his. I have been interested in derm since high school and I really don't want to give up my dream now.

I'm unsure of what our strategy should be? Should he take a year off to do research and we apply together with couples match...or would this be risky? Is there any other options we should consider?

Thanks!

If I were you: I would make sure he matches at a program that offers derm. I would then go absolutely crazy and DESTROY every clerkship and step2ck. Then, I would hang out with that department's program, do an away there if you're smart and will make yourself look good... then cross my fingers.

Obviously if your husband matches to ortho you won't really need to work at all, but he will.
If you match to derm... well I guess then neither of you will really need to work at all.

Like above, make sure that you both match somewhere and then have one or the other transfer.

Thanks for the feedback! My husband is willing to take next year off...would couples match be a bad idea though?

I think it's better for him to apply this year and try to match in a big city with a decent number of derm programs.

Derm and ortho are already competitive enough, couples matching would make it even harder
