Maryland Email?

So, here is the email I received from Maryland today...

"Thank you for your application to the Doctor of Dental Surgery program at the University of Maryland Dental School. We certainly appreciate your interest in our school.

Please know that your application has been reviewed by the Committee on Dental Recruitment and Admissions and has been placed under review. Your file will be periodically re-reviewed throughout the admissions cycle for consideration for invitation to interview. Please do update your AADSAS information as we proceed through the cycle, as this information will be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.

Your file will remain under consideration and we will continue to update you as we proceed through our admissions cycle."

So they said that my file was placed "under review". Does this mean that I'm basically on their waiting list and that I should be at the least greatful that they didn't just reject me?

Sounds like it to me. I guess you didn't get into the 1st round of interviews, but there's still a chance of getting into the later ones. Hang in there!

At least you got that much from them. I was placed on hold last week due to 6 "missing" credits of English. I do, in fact, have the 6 credits and e-mailed them so. I have yet to hear back.

Same here. I guess I am missing Biochem but I'm taking it right now. Hopefully we will hear back soon.

All I have to say is DRAT!!! I really think Maryland would have been a fun place to study dentistry. It seems that most "holds" end up turning for the worst (as in rejection). Needless to say, my hope for ultimately getting admitted has dwindled. Nevertheless, I am pleased that they were at least impressed with me to the point that they didn't just reject me right off the bat; though I probably will sooner then later anyway. Good luck to all of you who have interviews! And good luck to those of you who still have a much better chance than I in getting in. I'm sure my 14 QR didn't help as I've heard that they have cut-offs. Ciao!

I kind of figured that the "missing credits" thing was their way of rejecting me. It's a shame they don't have the balls to do it straight up and not beat around the bush.

I had the same exact thing with the english. It said I wouldn't finish it, but our first year we have some screwed up seminar that counts for english. I was also in the middle of my 2nd english class. So I emailed them back a description of the 1st yr course plus the website which explains what it is.

Within a few weeks it was cleared up. Just give it some time. I still got invited to interview in November.

BTW I got that weird missing english thing in like mid to late September.

A real rejection comes in the form of a snail-mail letter and a note on AADSAS status. You're still in the running.

As denticus said, UMaryland is a fun place to go to dental school. They do an excellent job of picking a very friendly, laid back, cohesive class that is able to meet the rigors of dental school. Needless to say, I am very happy that this is where I ended up!

Thanks for the info, JB! I really want to visit because one of the dentists I shadowed is an alum and this past summer he went back for his 20 yr class reunion. He was telling me about the new facilities and how nice the campus was so I'm really looking forward to hopefully visiting it.

I have the same thing as you do.
Based on last year experience, it doesn't look good on me.
The letter from Maryland is always very polite. It almost makes you think there is a hope to get an invitation.
However, it may not apply to you because we all have different stats.
Just share my experience with you.

I got that email last year and didn't hear back until I was rejected around april or so. Sorry, not the best news, but this was my experience with the email

yah same here guys .. they sent me an e-mail saying my file is on hold because i'm missing physics and organic chem, both of which i have. i haven't replied because i don;t know how to tell them in a nice way that it;s on the same transcript that they claim to have reviewed...
now that i've seen this thread i wonder what that school is on...do they just look at half the transcript or is that a nice way of tell us off???😕

pharoh, it's probably just a misunderstanding. you have 2 options.. you can

(1) e-mail the school at [email protected] and explain that you received an e-mail about the missing coursework, but that you have taken the courses as they are reflected on your transcript, or

(2) do nothing about it, and not be considered.

the option to take seems pretty clear to me.

all these concepts are very strange.... english classes are one thing because they could be misunderstood but if it says O chem i mean... that doesn't make sense..... maybe it is a computer generated emails that send out these emails.... it has to be if there are this many errors....

I still haven't heard anything from Maryland yet. However, now that it's practically 2008 I feel that my chances are shot with Maryland. Good luck though...you never know.

thanks for the response and good luck to you too but wait why is there no shot? is MD known for being full earlier? some schools keep saying that they're going to interview well into the spring. as long as their interview days aren't book we still have a shot right? am i being too naive? I know getting a continuing review letter is not as great as getting an interview but it's not getting rejected either. i guess i just hear those expection stories where people get in late or actually do hear from being on waitlists and what not so I'm trying to stay hopefull and trying to see if there is anything else we can do.

Course I don't think you're naive. On the contrary, I think that it's great that you're still optomistic about getting into Maryland. In fact, it is possible that you may very well get accepted. I didn't want to come across as pessimistic about our situation, but that's just me. If I don't see a signs of a guranteed acceptance I try to prepare myself for the worst witch consequently makes me work harder for my goals. I still have hope though. Good luck .
