Hi

I just wondered what everybody's thoughts were on UVa and Maryland. I like UVa alot. Their residents seemed extremely sharp and very knowledgeable. Im probably going to rank these programs in my top 5. I was not too impressed at maryland but I know their training is very rigorous so probably the residents were just too tired to appear sharp to an interviewee such as myself. Again, Im interested in cardiology and Im hoping to apply during my second year of residency.

Hey- I felt the same about UVA's residents. I was very impressed with their morning report and noon conference, and just in talking to the various residents (from interns to chiefs) I felt like they were a smart and friendly group of people. I would definitely get along with them. There also seemed to be a good mix of singles, recently married, and married with kids. Unfortunately, UVA's downside IMO is that it is not as diverse as Baltimore, and this goes for both the patient population and the residents. Don't get me wrong--I really liked the UVA residents. But I felt like they were mostly from the South, whereas Maryland drew residents from more diverse locations.

I'm probably going to rank UVA higher than Maryland though, b/c the sense I get is that UVA is a stronger program (and I just liked it better). Good luck making your decision!

UVA was AWESOME! One of my best interview experiences and I'm pretty much done at this point. They really stood out as a strong program. They are stronger than UMD based on rankings from what I understand, but I'd focus on the fellowship match record. I was very impressed with UVA's fellowship match list in ALL specialties, whether it was Cards or GI or Heme/Onc. Great for primary care too. Also, the PD seemed to be very resident-friendly...you'd expect that out of most PDs but you'd be surprised. The night-float system seems to work well for them(no o/n call). If anyone has fellowship match lists for UMD please post, I'd like to know for myself as well. Regardless, go with your instincts-if you loved UVA over all other programs, rank it #1. You certainly wouldn't be at a disadvantage clinically if you chose UVA over UMD.

Maryland is in a great city though and there is lots to do in Maryland if you step out into the surrounding areas. I heard in some forums though that Maryland is a tad malignant. I was hoping if anybody who knows Maryland really well can elaborate on this?

the fellowship match list at Maryland is not as impressive as UVa but I wonder if its because of their busy schedule. Most cards people match in house or in the east coast area.

Uhh, I surely hope you don't actually believe this... especially when comparing Baltimore to lovely Charlottesville. To give you an example, the PD at Hopkins clearly states on interview day that people bear living in Baltimore because they are working at Hopkins, rather than the reverse . Unless you are applying for ED/Trauma Surgery (at which UMD is superb), Im not sure why you would voluntarily choose to live in Baltimore over Charlottesville, where there is a stronger fellowship match, happier residents, and a substantially more beautiful setting. Also, at UVA you are the only show in town... no competition with Hopkins, Bayview, Mercy, etc over patient care. You might find this to be more important than you think.

I agree with futureres and lakeplacid. Listen to your gut and pick UVA, digoybugoy.

Good luck though, you can't go wrong either way! 👍

I like both programs. This is a pretty "apples and oranges" discussion. The more places I interviewed at the more all the programs blurred together, but wow - Maryland and Virginia are like polar opposites as far as patient population. I think if you like big city life, Maryland's the way to go. If you like a more rural/college town experience, it's Virginia for you. I don't think you can go wrong with either program though. I haven't heard that either program's malignant, but I'm not too worried about that. I look at residency as a necessary evil. How else are we supposed to learn all this crap in 3 years?

Charlottesville is a great town. It is safe, small, has good restaurants, you have UVA sports and it is in a beautiful area. It really cannot get much more scenic than the area right outside C-ville. It is like a real city just on a smaller scale.

The only problem is that because the population is so small and hospitals in Richmond poach all of the indigent care of basically the entire state except west of C-ville, the patient population is relatively limited. In terms of prestige I don't think anyone can argue UVA is a stronger program but I feel patient population is the largest detriment to UVA's program.
