Hi

How do you rate this book? I got it to keep with me on the wards during internal medicine / neurology / paeds (and everything else I guess!) and I think its good, although the odd rant against epononyms and the peculiar jokes somewhat spoil it. It got excellent reviews on amazon though, and it certainly manages to cover an immense amount of detail in enormously few pages...

Anybody else use this? Or is the 'On Call' book better? Or another book altogether?

I like the MGH handbook a lot for inpatient neurology (used it on my 3rd year clerkship and sub-I)--has great information, very concise and fits into a coat pocket. Wish the book itself was a little more physically durable--many of the pages have bent from sitting in my coat over time!

During my subI, I used On Call and the previous edition of MGH Handbook. To be quite honest, I didn't think either was perfect, certainly not in the same league as Pocket Medicine was for my medicine months. Both the former have good info, but there was a good bit of info lacking - when I only had one on me, it didn't have the info I would need at the time, and lo and behold, the other one would when I would get back to the resident's room to look it up (I could only "afford" the weight of one book at a time). A friend who is a resident just bought the Pocket Companion to Bradley, etc., and though a little thicker, did seem to have a lot more info.

If only someone would make the analogue to Pocket Medicine for neurology!

Funny you should mention it...

There is a new "Pocket Neurology" style book currently being created at the aforementioned institution. The residents and fellows are writing chapters as we speak.

God only knows how long it will be in the editorial process.

Maybe I should start asking for more things! 😛 That's great to hear. Perhaps it'll be out by the time I'm a PGY2. I could even get a bigger binder and perhaps keep both Pocket Med and Pocket Neuro together! Wait, who am I kidding. As an M3, I carried way too much stuff in my pockets - back would kill me. Now as a senior, I often don't even have my coat on.

any comments on the "little black book of neurology"?
