I was reading the handbook for the school I'm attending this fall. I saw that if you finish the first 2 years of med school with all passing grades, you can choose to drop out, do a thesis, and then the school will award you a master's degree.

I think that's great. Many people do chug along because they feel that they have no way of escaping. $150K is more than I would pay for a master's, but it is something.

Is that common/do many schools do this?

So it's basically just an SMP with two years instead of one?
Kindofish, but I think it's a lot better than leaving with nothing. Plus, if you tie it with a strong research background, you can start at higher paygrades and work it in fields that won't necessarily understand what the degree is (and this school is one of the schools that has recruiters for Bain and other consulting companies, so if you don't already have undergrad pedigree, that could segway your way there- and if you couple it with undergrad pedigree, you could work it even more)
