So I will be graduating from UC Irvine this year and my GPA is pretty bad. Let's just go ahead and say it'll be around 3.0 when I apply in May. Anyway, while I'm waiting for news from Dental Schools I will be enrolling in a masters program.

For all of you in SoCal who have either been in a master's program or currently enrolled in one, do you have any recommendations? Does it matter if I enroll in a master's program that is not an SMP and then apply again (in case I don't get in the first time). I read a few posts stating that Dental Schools do not want to accept grad students in the middle of their graduate work. Is this true? The reason why I ask this is because I want to stay in California but I don't think we have any SMP's here.

Also if I apply to the Cal State graduate programs (CAL STATE LA, CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE) do you think that will suffice? Or do you think I need to apply to a higher tier graduate program? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I know someone did not have high GPA, but extremely high DAT. He got a lot of interviews. I think a master program will help you, and Cal state program is great and not that hard to apply. Good luck!

I'm in the ame boat! I have applied to the MPH program at CSUN and I'm going to start in the spring. The program takes two years. I do not know of any SMP in the LA area.

I think Cal state LA has good master program, and it will not be hard to apply too. I have a friend studies there, and she likes the school. Good luck!

Go to Cal St. L.A. as a post-bacc student, like I did. Graduated from UC Davis with around a 2.8 and started Loma Linda this fall.

CSULA:
1. It is pretty cheap ($1500/qtr.)
2. Small classes
3. Can have a pretty full schedule packed in to just mornings or afternoons, which is good if you have to work.
4. Professors are pretty good and approachable.

Good luck. Let me know if you want to know any more about the school.
