if you did call- would love to know what their answer was to all those questions !!
THIS IS THE REPLY!!
Thank you for reaching out. I will copy your questions and answer them below.
How many BMS students matriculated into Marian’s medical school? This year we have offered 22 BMS students a seat and of those 20 have deposited. Last year 24 BMS students matriculated into MU-COM’s DO program. There are still BMS students on the wait list so the number could still change this year.
How many students dropped the program? Based on information from February, only 3 students had dropped out of the program. The person who has this information is out today, but I can try and get updated information tomorrow, assuming she is in.
How many students dropped courses? I will need to follow up on this as I do not have that information readily available. I can tell you that students are not penalized in the DO admissions process for dropping a course. Of the 22 students accepted, 3 of them dropped 1 class. Of those on the wait list, 2 of them have dropped a course.
The email about the BMS program states 3.5 gpa and 497 MCAT but a part of your website says 491 MCAT? To get a guaranteed interview to MU-COM you need to have a 3.5 GPA in the fall semester and a 497 on the MCAT. We require a 491 minimum MCAT score to be eligible for the program. Please let me know if you see somewhere on the website that says a guaranteed interview with a 491 MCAT score.
The deadline to change GPA and MCAT requirements who makes that decision? I do not know of any MCAT or GPA requirement changes to our program or for a guaranteed interview. Also, not meeting the 3.5 GPA does not mean you won’t be eligible for an interview. We did interview BMS students with below a 3.5 GPA in the program.
How many students retook the MCAT? Again, I do not have an exact number, but I spoke with someone that told me he could only think of 3 people that re-took the MCAT of our interviewees. The vast majority of our BMS students that were accepted into our DO program had the same score they came into the BMS program with.
I heard many student complaints from last year about the program, courses and professors and I wanted to see if anything was addressed or change? We had a consultant come in to evaluate the program. Based on some of his recommendations some changes were made. Some of those include standardizing syllabi for courses and grading for every course. Course loads will be regulated so one course doesn’t take up more time than every other class. The faculty have also met to have discussions regarding concerns and to make improvements.
The program is aware that there were issues last year and have been working to make sure it does not happen again, as it has not in the 2 previous years.
Also, our program does help prepare you for medical school. In the first semester of our DO program, our BMS matriculants have scored 10 percentage points higher than those who did not complete our BMS program.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Sincerely,
Ricky
