I noticed that some physicians have an MD with an MA, MS, MPH or all the above haha. I was wondering what you could do with the masters along with the MD. Do some doctors use their masters to practice elements of non-clinical work? I am contemplating on a career in medicine, but want to be able to use my skills in both clinical and non-clinical areas. I seriously don't mean to ask a dumb question, so please don't interpret it that way.

:luck:

You are correct, there are many physicians that with an addition to an MD they also have an MA, MS, or MPH. However ipo think about it. These doctors got the MA, MS or whatever years ago, when a SMP or postbacc was unheard of, and that MS or MPH was the closest thing to what an SMP is today. Basically they were improving their credentials for med school. If you want to use your skills in both clinical work (seeing smelly patients 😀 ) and non-clinical work, I suggest applying or looking into an MD PhD progam. It usually takes around about 7 years to get to that stage, and its highly prestigious 😎 Now a question for you is, how do I go from Pre-pharm to MD PhD

At the moment, I'm a freshman in a six year pharmacy program, so that is why I am enlisted as pre-pharmacy, haha...if that's what you're asking.

I'm not sure about doctors getting MPH or MAs years ago. I was referring to the MD/MPH or MD/MA combination programs that some medical schools offer today. Some people go crazy with the combinations (Some doctor I noticed had an MD, PhD, JD, MBA which is pretty much one lifetime spent in school haha). But besides that guy, I was just wondering what people do with a masters and a MD.

one guess is that they would want to be doing administration, if its an MPH or MPA...

Not true. Many doctors these days get MPH or any of the above after medical school. Many do it to work in public health, conduct translational research, become admins and get out of the daily grind of clinical work. Look at harvard or yale MPH faculty. Many got these masters degrees years after the MD. A Phd is in most arenas except epi or public health is more for bench research.

If you are not high on workign with and touching patients everyday many of the same opportunities that MD, MPHs or MD MBA etc. have are also available to PharmD. Many schools have combined degrees now.

yea, there are many current programs that in addition to an MD, you can get an MBA or MA or m whatever. However, first you have to get into the MD program which is the hard part

aw hahaha, looks like you're freaked by touching people. That's understandable, though. Hey, what are you getting your pharm residency in?

Actually if I had it to do all over again I would be a surgeon. Anyways I am finishing my 2nd year in transplant pharmacy. Plan on doing an MPH in epi at some point in the future.
