Match Advanced but PY

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you don't get a prelim year during soap, or afterwards, you will lose your advanced position. The program will file for a match waiver because of your lack of PGY1 training.

What happens if I match Advanced but not PY, and don't match PY through SOAP?
You spend the next 3 months asking for help from your med school/letter writers/friends/family/remote acquaintances/the internet to find you an intern year somewhere doing something.

You find the most malignant surgery prelim in West Bum****, Arkansas and hope they have an empty spot still. Or equivalent.

The people that have the most difficulty when this happens are neurology residents, because surgery prelims don't count for them. Only medicine does, and there's a lot fewer open medicine prelim spots than there are surgery.

To be fair though West Bum**** sometimes gets a bad rap. Not high on the tourism lists, but anyone can survive one hard year in the salt mines. You do what you gotta do. And when you stagger out of the killing fields, an advanced spot is a nice light at the end of the tunnel. 🙂

The very worst would be peds neuro. Even fewer of those prelims around.
