I'm hearing a lot about the Match Day ceremonies at allopathic programs. I'm just curious. I know that osteopathic schools have their own match day in February but that you can opt to do the allopathic match in March. Do any osteopathic schools have match day ceremonies for either the osteopathic or allopathic match days? Just curious.

KCUMB does not have a match day ceremony for either. If you're rotating at a place on match day that does have a ceremony, it's just another reminder of what you do not get for your tuition money.

I am pretty sure that PCOM does have a match day festivity since they did post pics on their website.

MSUCOM does not have a match day ceremony either 🙁

It's my understanding that any Match Day festivities are done with the people you rotate with and not necessarily with your class as a whole. Am I incorrect?

Well...as the OP alluded to, the match isn't exactly as clean a process for DO schools as it is MD ones. MD ones only have one system (excluding other ones that happen early like urology etc)--so their students match, a few scramble, and it's all set by the next few days...Many MD schools almost immediately thereafter put out a matchlist.

I've never been at a DO school on a match day, but I'd imagine because there's both the osteopathic and allopathic match--and probably a little more scrambling than at MD schools--there's not exactly one day that a school can celebrate everyone's match.

I think the idea of the formal match day is horrendous. Thrusting you in front of your peers and forcing you to open up a letter that you haven't seen and reading aloud where you'll spend the next 3+ years of your life. I much rather quietly find out and then go from there.

I think it's fun. I heard one school (allopathic) has a huge reception in the morning for students and their significant others. Envelopes are handed out around noon and one by one, students walk up to the big U.S. map and stick a pin in where they'll be going for residency. It's a "graduation" of sorts, only not as boring. LOL

Well, that is not all of it, though it celebrates a rite of passage.
The BIG advantage of having a formal match day is what happens if you do not match (you will know before match day). If this is the case, schools with such ceremonies typically have faxes and lists of unfilled programs (usually by specialty) readily available. As soon as they can release unfilled programs, you can peruse these lists and tell your school where to send your info. This can be done very quickly. When you do not have this in place, you're pretty much on your own. Doing all of this yourself is time consuming, and time is of the essence here, as unfilled programs fill very quickly. It also helps if you're in close proximity to your PD who can call other PD's and make a case for you (assuming you're PD is experienced). The match proess is stressful enough, and it helps when your school has mechanisms in place to assure you of every chance of matching at a solid residency program if you have to scramble.

Yea. I am well aware of all of those steps and what not. I guess I'm just a private person and rather take it in a second before i tell everyone else! I've never been a graduation person though. I tried to skip my high school graduation even, but my parents didn't let me. Of course, if you have to scramble into a spot, is that spot really going to be a guaranteed solid residency? Generally, if people don't rank the program, there is probably something wrong with it right? (Honest question. I'm sure there are exceptions and I have a million worries before I get to that point)

Nothing is wrong with privacy. I'm pretty sure you can opt out of the festivities if you like. 🙂

But, just because a program did not fill does not mean it is not good. For example, some people do not rank a program, even though they told the program that they would. Many people may not rank a program because they do not think they will have a chance. On the other hand, I know people who scrambled and got great residencies (I was surprised myself that some of these places & specialities did not fill).

Yes, lots to do before you get to this point, but the time goes by very quickly. 🙂

What's up with all the "Negative Nancy's" that go to KCUMB?

Is PCOM the only DO school that has match day festivities???

Must be why they're the "best" 😉

i think ohio college of osteopathic medicine has it for aoa match day

Unlike the PCOMers, we at DMU need no help by our administration to have "festivities". We party plenty hard without having a reason.

You are correct for some instances, however, many students have electives outside their base hospital at that point (and others enter the allopathic match so they have to wait a few weeks)...
