Anybody have stories of people who had ton of interviews and/or 'guarantees' to match only to end up not matching?

How many interviews do you need to match you think? I figured most places interview 10:1 so I assume 9-10 interviews is safe.

i didnt go through the match for pain, but your conclusion is faulty - the only correlation you can make is that the more interviews you get, the more an attractive candidate you are...

not sure why you're looking for reasons not to sleep well at night but yes... heard of a few. both anesthesiologists, both from top tier anesthesia programs. both interviewed at 8-10 programs. both did not match. There are also many non-anesthesia applicants that don't match but I don't know how many programs they interviewed at

Had a verbal guarantee that I would match at a place, ranked it number 1, but didn't match there. Oh well. Ended up having a great year at my home program and ended up creating an educational opportunity that has dramatically improved the program. I am the first fellow ever from our place to be adequately trained in stim implants and kyphoplasty. Now I am doing kyphos every week just two months out of fellowship.

I guess I am asking because I am considering taking an out of match position I had 6 interviews in the match and just didn't want to risk it so I wanted to make myself feel better

I guess that depends on how good you are with your interview skills. I heard someone who matched with 2 or 3 interviews, while someone with 18 interviews did not match.
