Maybe this is the wrong place to put this, but wondering something. I was looking at KCOM's match list tonight and under some of the more competitive residencies (anesthesiology, othro, etc.) it some that matched ortho or anest, but then has others traditional internship/program X ortho or anes etc...what exactly does that mean? They did an internship and now are getting those programs, or they matched and the first year is considered a traditional internship followed by the specific program? Is it common, and does it make you more competitive for tough residencies to do a rotating internship first?

In 5 states it's a licensing requirement for DOs to do a traditional rotating internship before residency. In those 5 states and everywhere else, the traditional rotating internship is part of every AOA (that's the DO governing body) residency, whether it's a separately matched program or integrated. If you do an ACGME (that's the "MD" residency org) residency, you can petition to have your intern year count as a traditional rotating. Or you can do an AOA traditional rotating and then match ACGME.

There's no way to tell from match lists what all those traditional rotators are doing next, unfortunately.
