Hi guys, I have a question that I am sure has been posed before but I want to be 100% positive. Is it a match violation to tell programs that you "plan to rank them #1 on your rank order list", using that exact wording. Is it a match violation?

Agree with the comments above, but there are definitely program directors out there who think it is a violation and will drop you down/off their list if you say it. Source: my own PD, sigh.

Are you sure your PD didn't just mean dropping them down because they are telling you that you are not their #1?

I remember being told by program directors/coordinators "we're not allowed to say how we've ranked you," but maybe they were incorrect, in which case, I am too.

I don't have time to research it at the moment, but if somebody can provide a link showing I'm wrong (and I'd be happy to be wrong, that would be helpful news for applicants) I'll change my original post.

The Match Participants Agreement for applicants and programs, section 6.2 (Restrictions on Persuasion) makes clear which communications are prohibited. For example, it is forbidden for them to say that they are ranking you a certain place contingent upon you ranking them a certain place. However, volunteering where you plan to rank the other party, no strings attached, is not listed among the prohibited behaviors. It is also implied in the policy that these volunteered communications are not binding, as only the final certified rank list determines the match.
