You need to get as many pathology rotations under your belt as possible. I went through several interview seasons and those that stuck out were those that could relate to us via experience in pathology. Get as much experience as possible in AP and CP. When you are on your rotations, learn as much as possible. Get there early, stay to help late if you can. Show your enthusiasm (has to be sincere).

Go into Pathology because you love it. Dont go into it otherwise, because there are a lot of poor candidates that somehow got into the field.

I know ppl that had 4 months of Path rotations under their belt. The key is to get as many path related rotations and good letters of recommendation. If those letters are from academic pathologists, the better.

Apply to as many programs as you can afford.

Good luck.

Thanks....i did one cytogenetics and one path rotation however the hospital itself did not have a path program unfortunately. My rotations are coming to a close in a month. I am also working on my mba as well, hope it helps.

You will get in SOMEWHERE along with the rest of the crowd.

:/.....not convinced, but I hope you are right.

Unfortunately a path rotation, although better than nothing, at a program with no residency program will generate generic letters of recommendation from unknown hospitals. I would apply and see what interviews you can get.

Yes..pretty much its a toss up

You'll probably get in somewhere, but cast a very wide net. Your application is probably slightly below average, right around the interview threshold at mid-tier programs. Don't waste your money on high-tier programs.

Has anybody heard of or seen anybody match with these type of credentials in the past? Also is Cali worth applying to as a IMG?

I'm sure you will get some interviews, especially at smaller programs in less desirable locations (they aren't all bad). I agree with not wasting your money on the more competitive places/places that just don't deal with IMGs. A lot of programs list their minimum scores on their website (a lot of the time they require higher scores from IMGs). You could start there and try to narrow down where to apply to. Try to get pathology rotations under your belt/LORs from pathologists. Also, pathology research (particularly publications) can help strengthen your application. As for Cali....I'm not sure it's worth the extra paperwork. I matched this year as (as an IMG), and didn't bother with Cali--just because I was too exhausted having just finished CS/CK. Apply to all the programs you would be willing to go to, and interview at as many as possible. I matched to my number 1 program, as a US-IMG, so its possible! Best of luck!

Unless you have George clooney looks and charm and get an interview places like stanford and ucsf are probaly out of the question. But places like irvine or Sacramento are probably on the table.

Apply broadly and include places that you think are out of your league because you never really know unless you try.

Thanks for the info...appreciate it.

We did rank one candidate in a situation similar to yours (U.S. citizen from Caribbean med school and slightly below average Step scores), but only because the person had done a rotation in our department (and they weren't ranked very highly even with that). I think they matched somewhere else. Make sure you get good LORs (as many as possible from pathologists).

Thats pretty good from a matching stand point and the applicant still got in somewhere, not bad at all.

My usual advice is to do the least amount of pathology posslbe to match as a medical student and do as much surgery and medicine as possible cause you won't get any more medical knowledge after starting residency.

In your case, I would choose those pathology rotations wisely- ones with residency programs that you have a chance of matching into- make them see what a sure bet you are. And you may also want to more than the bare minimum number of rotations. While you're on the rotation, it goes without saying that you have to be a star; helping out residents and showing the attending what a great person you are. That's how IMGs with your stats match. In my experience.

Got 4 more weeks left before all my rotations are wrapped up. I will try to do one more path rotation as I did 1 path and 1 cytogenetics already. Problem is most places with programs wont take non LCME students in my area (NYC). I know of only one in my area that I am trying to rotate through.

Thank you guys all this information...I really appreciate it!

Take your Step 3 if possible before the match. That will help your application as well. All you need to do is pass. PDs have had issues with residents not being able to pass Step 3 by their 2nd year so if you pass Step 3 before the interview season you will be in a better position.

I'll give you what I can as far as a measuring stick goes and it's not a very impressive measuring stick but I matched at my number 2 out of 9 ranked places so....here you go.

Away Rotation and Letter of recommendation from away rotation.
3 Pathology rotations during my interview season

other than what you see, I didn't have any background in pathology other than an extreme interest that began during my second year of medical school. IDK if the Caribbean med school thing is going to help or hurt you but pathology is a field that has a lot of FMGs. You might have to apply to more programs. I applied to 22 programs accepted 17 interviews and of those seventeen cancelled 5. Hope this helps give you an idea.

Thats great man good for you!! Appreciate you honesty.

Most IMG's or FMG's have to apply to at least 85+ programs and maybe...and I mean maybe you'll get 4-6 interviews if your lucky with credentials like ours from what I understand.

Being a AMG is a big deal....look you only applied to 22 programs and got 17 interviews which is amazing I might get 3-4 if I'm lucky...Most institutions rank you below 3, your usually not there number one choice as a IMG. Only thing I have going is I was born in the US and citizen..lol

Thanks for the feed back.

There is one program you may have a chance to get an interview and match at which is called utsw in dallas. From what I understand, they didn't fill this year and they have a total of 9 spots! So, I'm not at all surprised. So I would def try there for sure.

Not trying to pick on you here, but may I strongly suggest you have someone else read any written correspondence you have with programs? There are two grammatical errors ("your" and "there" are each the wrong homonym) in the above post, and PDs do notice that kind of stuff. Written reports are a big part of medicine, and proper written and spoken English are essential. If we hold FMGs to that standard, we certainly must hold native English speakers to it as well. You're right that non-AMGs have a disadvantage to start, and for that reason every little thing counts.

This is completely untrue. UTSW assuredly filled this year! Why on earth would you post this? Where did you 'understand' this? 😕

Looking back on the NRMP data from 2008 to present they have filled every year.
