Hi! I tried to search for this but couldn't find any info.

How does the match work for DO? Let's say you want to go into a pretty competitive specialty- like Optho or Derm or something. Your main concern is to get into a residency program in that field, so you don't care if it is an osteopathic or allopathic residency. Can you attempt to match on both allopathic and osteopathic lists? Do students do this? Or, must you pick one or the other? How does the timing work out?

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

this thread has some pretty good info:

Yes, you can try to match both. The osteopathic match is before the allo, and if you match into one there you are dropped from the allo match.

I see. So if you would prefer an allo residency then you souldn't attempt to match DO because it will automatically drop you? That sucks.

Also, can you apply to an allo fellowship if you complete a DO residency? I heard that osteo fellowships are fairly limited. Anyone know where I can find out what fellowships there are?

match: you can match in DO (AOA) or MD (ACGME), like others have said ... for most fields, the matches aren't aligned and if you match AOA you are automatically dropped from ACGME. Here are the AOA residencies:

For the ACGME residencies, go to freida:

fellowships: if you go AOA for residency, most of the time you have to also go AOA for fellowship. There are actually quite a few situations where you can petition or fellowships will take AOA residencies into their fellowship, but technically you are supposed to complete an ACGME residency to do an ACGME fellowship.

Some of your questions could be answered in the DO section...do a search on fellowships and a lot of threads will pop up.

For the really competitive residencies, your best shot would probably be with an AOA program; however, every year there are a few MD matches.

For primary care (IM, FP, Psych, Ob/Gyn) and EM, typically I would say you could forgo the DO match; however, with the increases in class size of both MD and DO schools, in a few years things are going to get more competitive.
