I am going to take a math class to help me improve my math before retaking the DAT. I haven't had math in a very long time and feel like I could really benefit from a class. So, would a college algebra class be the best class to take, or a trig class? I've never had trig and on the DAT I maybe got 1 out of 4 trig questions right. But it seems like college algebra covers a lot of the topics tested on the DAT. What do you think?

I don't think it's worth it.. If you've learned all of the math before, you'll probably learn a lot more going through everything at your pace through review books and then math destroyer.

The best thing to do is go over the basics first yourself and make you sure you understand them. then get algebra books and trig books ( basic ones) or go online and look up stuff. when you think you are "ok" get the math destroyer and go over it. They have explanations in the back for each test and the destroyer covers almost every topics.
If you feel that you will learn more in a classroom setting then it's your choice.
best of luck

I haven't taken the DAT yet but i dont think this is a bad idea. From what ive read most people run out of time on the QR portion and i can't help but think this is because their math skills are unpolished. Math, like chem, is not a spectator sport and i think the time you invest in class would pay big dividends simply bc you will be doing a lot of problems and allowing the subject to become second nature; as opposed to reading blue book and doing a relatively small cross section of practice problems from destroyer, topscore. I think if you have time, this is a much better strategy than the cram and regurgitate route most people choose for QR.
As far as what course would be the most beneficial, if your university has a preparation for calculus course it wont hurt to look into it. I took this course before calc and it covered all the basic algebraic topics, coordinate geometry, trig, lots of word problems, and virtually NO calculus (makes sense right?). Although it did nothing to improve my calc understanding it did provide me with a solid math foundation and my DAT prep has been going much smoother for it. I should say that i am using standard prep materials to review high school geometry and basic stats bc these were not covered in my precalc course. Like i said i haven't taken the DAT yet and i know people may have the urge to negate the opinions of those who haven't been through the real thing. Im saying for me, taking a math course has relieved a ton of math anxiety.

Ok on my first take of the DAT my QR was a 15. So because of that I have been working a lot harder on increasing my QR score.

One tool will help you more than any other. Math Destroyer. My recommendation would be to get it. Go through each test without a time limit, one page at a time--then look at the answers for that page. Any problems that you had absolutely no clue on--bust out your white board and practice doing them and setting them up after you read and understand the solution. You will learn a ton and a lot of the same stuff will show up again and again as you run through the tests.

Towards the end the first time through (tests 8,9,10,11) I started timing myself just to speed up the process. I was surprised at how much faster i could set up the equations from the word problems and how "age" "combined work" and probability problems scared me less and less the more I did them. I still did not have enough time, but the ones I missed i reviewed and learned from my mistakes.

So far the 2nd time through I have been timing myself. I got one of those little minute timer thingies and only give myself 45 minutes for each test. If I look at a problem and do not know how to set it up in 10 seconds, I mark and move on, coming back to it at the end (practice for the real thing). I was impressed with how I remembered problem setups on the 2nd time through so much more, and how much that fear of certain problem types was gone. Go through all the tests a 2nd time, timed...and you will score so much higher. I got a 19 on the last topscore I took.

Last word of advice: Khan academy. Look it up on google. If you want a refresher on any math concepts he is the man for quick, easy to understand tutorials on any trig or math problem. Like for me, solving and graphing absolute inequalities always gave me a hard time. Khan had 3 10 minute videos explaining exactly what i needed to know. I have used his resource for age problems, absolute value, function inside function problems and a lot more. The key with Khan academy is to hit ctrl-F and search for whatever you need to work on.

Sorry this was a little long winded. The bottom line is the kind of questions they throw at you on the QR section are special and often times unique to this test. Spending a semester or more on a regular trig class will not help you as much as the 2 resources I mentioned for DAT QR problems.

I wish you good luck. From one who literally almost cried the first time he took the DAT QR section--believe me it gets so much better with the right practice.

yeah def check out salman khans website if you decide not to to take courses. He is so awesome. And the best part about his website is if you are REALLY uncomfortable with math you can start at arithmetic and logically progress through algebra all the way to multivariable calculus and beyond (see overview of Khan library on main page)
