we are told that 1 dollar = 7 drachmas and that 5 drachmas = 3 qulos. we are then asked to find the ratio of dollars to quilos.

The book says the answer is 21/5 ...
but isn't it 5/21?😕

(1Dollar) (7 drachmas/1Dollar) (3 qulos/ 5Drachmas) = 21/5 Qulos

Every thing else cancel out.

($1 /7 D)(5 D/3 Q) = $5/21 Q

So I would agree with you

The question is confusingly worded. Techincally I think you could both be right depending on how you interpret it. 5/21 Dollar = 1 qulo or 1 dollar = 21/5 qulos.

I guess it just depends on how you set up the ratio.

No the answer is 21/5. Here look at how i solved it:

(1) 1$= 7 D
(2) 5 D= 3Q

So to set an equation where ($=Q) you set the second equation in terms of D:
D=3/5Q and you plug it into the first equation for D:

1$= 7(3/5Q) = (7x3)/5 = 21/5

1 dollar =21/5 quilos

Sorry to bump this, but if 1 dollar = 21/5 quilos, and the question asks for the ratio of dollars to quillos, wouldn't you do:

1 dollars/(21/5 quillos) = 5/21 dollars to quillos.

Isn't that what they're asking? the ratio?

I think this is a different question!
Sorry about that!
