Math destroyer test number 2 question 5! 2017 version I don't get the explanation! How do u come up with answer 3

Another way to solve the problem is if you turn the picture around. The area of the shaded region is the area of a triangle.
A= (1/2)B.H
The base is (1 + 2)= 3. ( The side of the small square plus the side of the big square). The height is 2. ( The side of the bigger square)
A=(1/2)*3*2 = 3
