"A roulette wheel consists of 38 slots. 36 of these are
numbered 1 through 36 and colored red or black so
that there are nine red even-numbered slots, nine black
odd-numbered slots, etc."

I don't understand this problem.
I never played roulette but picture from google shows that there are alternation between red and black.
so if there are 36 slots, there should be 18 red and 18 black slots.

why does this problem say there are only 9 red and 9 black slots?

edit: nvm, i think i got it.
In roulette, there are 9 even red, 9 odd red, 9 even black, and 9 odd black. The problem maker was just too lazy to write the other two down so a casino noob got confused 🙂

You know the problem says 'etc' right? Which means there's more stuff not listed.

Don't forget they also have '0' and '00' which aren't even/odd or red/black. They're just there to screw you out of money.

Streetwolf, r u sure u r not living in casino?

It says 9 EVEN red, which means there are 9 ODD red also.
BS...everyone wins at casinos...the odds are completely for the players.

woah woah woah, why is nobody mentioning the Zero and Double Zero, only Streetwolf did, also you can bet on 0 and 00, you can make big money there.

those are why there are only 36 colored red or black, the last two are Zero and Double zero, they are not colored.

I love going to casinos. You don't have to be a math genius though to know that you're expected to lose every game they offer in the long run.

Thats not true, if you know what you are doing you will always make money. It is the greedy and stupid people tghat lose money in casinos. Certain games its all probability, and if you play so that the odds are in your favor you will never lose. I will not elaborate, but suffice it to say that what I am saying is the truth, based on fact and personal history.

I can't quite tell if you are joking or not...

The only game I can think of that you can shift the odds in your favor is blackjack and that's by counting cards. Even then you have just over 50-50 odds (I think). That's why they kick card counters out. Casinos won't let ANY game be played in which the player can play so that the odds are in their favor.

The two reasons people win in my eyes are:

(1) probability works in the long run, so there will be some winners and even more losers, and
(2) people get lucky and win when they bet bigger. If you always bet $20 when you win and always bet $10 when you lose, you'll more often than not win money in the long run. However you are still expected to lose more hands than you win!
