Anybody know if this program is good - does Mayo name carry any weight when you graduate?

Also, they're listed as advanced program but website states there is a 'required' prelim year - anybody know if the prelim is required to be done at Mayo Florida?

Thanks!

no it just means like all other ADVANCE program you are required to do a PRELIM year whether it be at mayo or anywhere else shouldn't matter so long you get the prelim done.

I think there is some confusion here. The program website at http://www.mayo.edu/msgme/residencies-fellowships/anesthesiology/anesthesiology-residency-florida reads that their preliminary year is included making it a categorical program. NRMP data (http://b83c73bcf0e7ca356c80-e8560f4...t/uploads/2013/08/programresults2009-2013.pdf) also uses a "C" (categorical) code the last 2 cycles, so I think it is a categorical program.

I know that it was an advanced program going back a few years because I know someone who graduated from the program, and he did his prelim year at another institution. It seems as though they are categorical now.

As for the name, I don't know how much weight it carries since the medical community recognizes this as a separate institution from Mayo Rochester, and this program has only been around for 10 years. Look at where the prior graduates have gone at the interview and see if they have common goals with you.

Realistically, the Mayo name may or may not open doors, once you graduate. Folks "in the know" realize that the mothership in Rochester (MCR) has a different culture from MCS and MCJ. Neither Scottsdale nor Jax seemed to be as "rigorous" in expectation as MCR, at least not when I was there. MCR placed much more emphasis on ITE and board scores. They also seemed to think much more highly of themselves.
I was part of the 2nd class to graduate MCJ and feel that my training was superb. Most of the attendings at Jax and Scottsdale came from Rochester. I had 3 oral board examiners to quiz me every single day of residency (Cuchiarra, Murray, Brull), as well as Dorsch and Greengrass. There are (were) many other well-published and competent attendings.
At the end of the day, depending upon your goals, it matters little. Outside of the world of academics, the name of your residency institution will not matter all that much. Your individual skill set, work ethic, and ability to play well with others will speak volumes. 🙂 Those are the things I look for when we interview candidates and assess potential new hires.

Best of luck!
