I have a few questions about mayo secondary.

I received their secondary last week. They want me to answer two of five questions in essay format. do they want two separate essays or 1 essay that answers two of five questions chosen.

and I was wondering if everyone who submitted primary and paid fee receives secondary.

thanks!

you mean "receives interview"?

Mayo is EXTREMELY selective with its secondaries. Congratulations on getting it!

congrats on getting the secondary, care to share what the questions are?

Please select two of the following questions:
1) Describe one sustained service activity that you have engaged in. What needs were identified and how were these needs addressed in this service activity?

2) Describe a person who you have worked with in a service activity. What did you learn from that person?

3) Describe a situation when you had to engage and motivate others to achieve a goal. How did you do it?

4) What innovative solution have you contributed to a problem or research question?

5) What do you do to maintain health and balance in your life?

I sumbitted mine yesterday. I responded to two of the questions, a paragraph each, both on the same page. It says to submit the responses (plural) to each question, not response (singular--as in one response answering both questions). I tried not to overthink it; however, the sentence below in bold threw me little. It doesn't make sense to me within the context of the rest of the email. Oh well, I've found that usually when I'm confused everyone else is confused, too. So I'm not too worried about it.

Hey guys (and gals),

I was just wondering how long it took to receive your secondaries after you paid the application fees and also if they place a early deadline for their secondaries? (I know like for Michigan State they have a 2-week deadline)

Thanks a bunch!

I paid on 8/1 and got the secondary today and they don't list a deadline for returning it

I paid my fee on 8/01 also but wasn't notified that they'd received it until the 9th. I received the secondary 8/23. I have to wonder if they are only sending out 500 secondaries this year. It seems like paper secondaries are much less labor intensive than the phone interviews for the adcom, so maybe the number has increased. Just a thought. If anyone hears anything let me know.

I talked to the lady in the admissions office (who by the way was the nicest person that I have ever talked to in an admissions office) and she told me that they are sending out the same number of paper secondaries this year as they usually do for phone interviews every other year.

According to MSAR, (2008-9)

521 received secondaries (phone-interviews)
and 295 applicants were offered on campus interviews last year.

good luck with secondaries everyone!:luck:

Anyone have an issue with their payment page? When I click on the "Make E-Payment" button, the next page won't load.😕

did they email you guys asking to send payment?? Or did you just go ahead and make the payment on your own?

I got an e-mail, but only after they had my app for a while.

What are these phone interviews? Do I have to interview over the phone with them even after I submitted their secondary and interview with them in person, or did the secondary repalace the phone interview? 😕

The secondary replaced the phone interview.

for the question about describing a person i worked with in a service activity and what i learned, do you think it would be fine for me to describe an employee of a non-profit org i worked with?

i have a feeling the preferred response might be about working with someone served by the non-profit and what i learned about society / the underserved / etc, but i feel like i could expound a lot upon how to go about effectively working towards social change by writing about the employee (more specifically, the director of the non-profit that i worked closely with).

any input?

I'm still in limbo with them 🙁

Yep. I know what you mean. I was expecting a rejection or a secondary right away given the way they have done it in the past.

I'd just like to mention that I'm jealous of all of you, since I just got my pre-secondary rejection e-mail five minutes ago

Best of luck to everyone. :luck:

how long after you submitted your essays did the unfortunate news arrive?

-thanks!

Hey, at least you got that e-mail. I'm still waiting for the rejection!

wtf, how did you not get a secondary?

has anyone been rejected post secondary yet?

wtf, how did you not get a secondary?

I'm not too sure why I was excluded-- I plan on e-mailing them next year when they allow people to inquire as to the reason for their rejection. There are a lot of competitive applicants, and I guess they just thought that I didn't stand out from the pack.

I'm still waiting for any news from Mayo as well heh

Ditto. I figured I wouldn't hear anything until my most recent MCAT scores were released, but that was almost a week ago. I've been furiously checking my e-mail ever since.
