Hello all, has anyone gotten into a competitive Summer Research program like Mayo's after their freshman year or is it too much of a long shot? In addition to academic success, how involved were you in your research (were you already published)? I'm interested in Mayo in particular because of my interest in diabetes.

I find that to compete for such research opportunities, previous research experience and having upper-level sciences are a must. Do you have these already as a freshman?

*Edit: AFTER you are a freshman?

I'll be done with at least one paper (hopefully I could get it published by the time I submit my application) but I won't have any upper level science courses. Would my engineering major make me more marketable? Are there any less competitive programs that are geared towards those with little research experience/rising sophomores that you can reccomend?

For any of these competitive summer research programs, you will need to know someone on the inside or you need to have extensive research background
