Mayo vs. Cornell

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Two drastically different locations. If you have a full scholarship at Mayo and no help at Cornell, go with Mayo (no doubt). If you don't like Rochester, suck it up! You can fly out every weekend if you want! 😀

If they are the same price or reasonably close (of course, open to interpreation) then pick based on location. They are as different as they can be!😀

I don't know anything about Mayo's curriculum, but Cornell is PBL heavy. Can't really help that. Congrats on your great options!

OwenMichael wrote a great post about Mayo and I would 2nd everything he had to say. I love the school, my classmates, the curriculum, the price...pretty much everything. The downsides from my perspective are the winters (although you still have winter in NY too) and the diversity in Rochester isn't too great (compared to CA.)

Just to comment on a few other things...the block system is great - 6 weeks is short but you only have a limited amount of info to pack in at that time so you do the best you can and know it will end very soon (with a 2 week break for you to relax or see patients, etc.) Even during the blocks I have had ample time to participate in a variety of community service projects, be in the clinic, do some research, and still have way more free time than I ever had in undergrad. Obviously there is some question as to whether or not we are truly learning everything we need to know to be good docs (and get stellar scores on the boards like other Mayo classes all have) with this new curriculum, but for that reason they are doing a lot of evals including NBME standardized exams. The last one we took for anatomy was about a 5% increase from previous Mayo classes, so obviously that means we learned the info (still doesn't prove we will retain the info I guess!) I find it assuring, however, and I think it's great to know that I can be in med school and learn what I need to learn and still have a life!

Hmmm...what else? You know we have a small class size which means a lot of individual attention and all the faculty know you by name. Being at the Mayo Clinic also means we get to learn from some of the best docs in the country and see a variety of "zebras" when we are in clinic...and when we are in clinic we are considered part of the treatment team. I got to admit my first patient this week (including writing the admit note and presenting) so that was pretty exciting! I've scrubbed in and participated in surgeries including suturing (although surgery is NOT what I'm interested in...if it was I could take initiative to do a lot more.)

The financial situation at Mayo and living in Rochester cannot be beat. My husband and I were able to build our first home and we are expecting our first child in a few weeks! Many of my classmates have also been able to buy condos or houses in Rochester...an option I can pretty much guarantee you would not have in NYC! I know nothing about Cornell to add any commentary on that, but I do have several friends at other med schools around the nation and none of them are experiencing anything like what I have at Mayo. Good luck with your decision.

EDIT: one thing I forgot! Selectives are great! If you have the connections/$$ you can pretty much do whatever you want whereever you want. There are some of my classmates who have only spent 1 selective period in Rochester - every other one they have arranged for experiencing in other states or countries. So if you hate Minnesota you do have the option to leave every 6 weeks 🙂

Ok, so let's say a person has the most extreme need - beyond what is shown as an example (i.e. very very poor). What is the limit of aid one could expect? Could a FULL need-based scholarship be possible?

No, I don't think that's possible. I think the least amount of debt someone can come out of Cornell with is around 75,000. This is how I interpreted what the finaid lady Gladys told me...According to her, loans are a 'mortgage on our career' and just like a house, we're expected to take one out. Can't really fault her though...We do have high earning potential.
