I recently interviewed at Mayo's peds program. I initally went just to "check it out" and found it to be a friendly place where the residents appeared to be happy. The residency as a whole seems solid. I tried a search on SDN and not much info came up. What's the word on the street? Thanks...

Did anyone else interview there? Like it? Hate it? I know it's in Rochester, but that doesn't bother me.

Anyway, I'm curious to hear about what people thought about or what they know about the program. I really never even considered it before my interview. I am thinking about ranking it high on my list, but I think I was so shocked about actually liking it and seeing myself there with the people I met, I may have blocked out any bad parts of the day 🙂
Thanks!

I AM A MEDICAL STUDENT AT MAYO, SO SINCE NO ONE IS RESPONDING, I'LL PUT IN MY LIMITED VIEWS. TO START, I AM NOT APPLYING THERE, CHIEFLY BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO SPEND ANOTHER 4 YEARS IN ROCHESTER. IT CAN BE A FAIRLY DIFFICULT PLACE TO LIVE IF YOU'RE SINGLE. THE VAST MAJORITY OF THE RESIDENTS ARE MARRIED, AND THE TOWN IN GENERAL IS MORE OF A FAMILY-FRIENDLY PLACE THAN A SINGLES-FRIENDLY PLACE.

THE PEOPLE (RESIDENTS) ARE REALLY, REALLY NICE, SMART, AND DOWN TO EARTH AND THERE ARE WONDERFUL FACULTY IN THE DEPARTMENT. IT'S VERY EASY TO GET INVOLVED WITH RESEARCH AT MAYO IN GENERAL, AND THERE ARE A TON OF RESOURCES AT THE INSTITUTION. YOU CAN ALSO GET FUNDED TO DO AN INTERNATIONAL ROTATION. ON THE OTHER HAND, IT IS ESSENTIALLY A SINGLE SITE TRAINING (MAYO), WHICH IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE COUNTRY. I WOULD RECOMMEND DOING ROTATIONS AT THE OTHER MAYO SITES (MORE COMMUNITY-BASED HOSPITALS) FOR BALANCE (AND NICER WEATHER). ALSO NOT A HUGE EMPHASIS ON PUBLIC HEALTH ISSUES AT MAYO BUT MY SENSE IS THAT THE OPPORTUNITIES ARE THERE, IT'S JUST NOT SOMETHING THAT IS DONE AS FREQUENTLY.

ON MY SUB-i I GOT FRUSTRATED WITH HAVING TOO MANY SUPERSUBSPECIALTY PATIENTS AND NOT ENOUGH PRIMARY CARE PATIENTS, BUT I THINK THAT WAS BAD LUCK, OTHER STUDENTS HAD MUCH MORE BALANCED PATIENT LOADS. IT IS NICE TO SEE SOME OF THE RARE STUFF TOO (ESPECIALLY IN NEUROLOGY, WHICH IS A FANTASTIC DEPARTMENT AT MAYO).

FEEL FREE TO ASK MORE SPECIFIC QUESTIONS AND I WILL ANSWER THEM TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY!

I also visited Mayo for an interview, and I did liked it a lot. Residents seem sharp and all faculty I met were the friendliest. But your post is kindda confusing to me. Are you not applying to Mayo just because you dont want to spend 4 more years in Rochester or is it really because all the drawbacks you encounter during your rotation?

If anyone has another point of view about this program
it would be kindly appreciated 🙂

i'm not applying there just because i don't want to spend 3 more years in rochester, not because of the rotation. and it's really not that bad of a town, if you like active sports (ie biking, x-c skiing), it's great. just not for me right now.
