MCAT score vs Step1

Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine in PR has a 20-21 median MCAT score, yet has 90% first time passing rate for Step1... I was told their average Step1 is right around the national average. I just want to throw that out there for people who are curious about how strong the correlation is between MCAT and Step1.

There's a thread in pre-allo that tells you exactly how strong the correlation is with fancy p-values and other nice things. Also, 95% overall pass rate sounds like you have a 1/20 chance (5%) of failing AT LEAST ONCE. I don't know if that's good.

Also this is an MD school so you're better off posting in the pre-allo section.

90% first time passing rate for a school that only admit 60-62 applicants is not good!
 
my guess is that it is similar in that if you are a good test taker, it will benefit you greatly. I also think that you can be bad a certain parts of the mcat and still study hard in med school and do well on the steps...
 
The important thing to note is that those who go to that school are probably not native English speakers. They probably are stronger with Spanish than English. There is no verbal section on the step 1. I don't think this school is a good candidate for what you are trying to prove.

True, but isn't VR has the strongest correlation with step1?

Probably not when English isn't your native language...
All other studies were most likely done with mostly US, native english speakers. You can't compare the two populations.
 
That's all fine and dandy if you're just trying to PASS. I would hope the majority are trying to do better than that.

If anything, one would expect the opposite. The test is in English. The greatest predictor is supposed to be the biology section followed by verbal.

I know people say not to trust Wikipedia, but according to them they say biology section is the number one prediction followed by physical science. They said verbal has no known correlation. They give their source of where they got their info from but when I tried clicking it I had to pay to read the article. But it looked legit
 
According to one of the deans at my school, people with a 24 or below struggled with course work and/or board exams. People with 27 or above had few problems.

The *median* average is 20... Even if they got ZERO points on their verbal section, that leaves a 10 on the sciences at best, which is an extremely average (below average?) score for most MD schools.

But anyone that can speak broken english can pull off a 5 on verbal, leaving 7's for the sciences. Which isn't great even if you have bad grammar.

That makes sense to me cause I know a few FMG whose English are not great and they crushed Step1/Step2, but they are very smart though...

According to the MSAR, their median score for BS(8), VR(7) and PS (7)....

I am skeptical of that claim only because I've never seen anyone put PS as better than VR.

I could see how that is true. I have a friend who scored in the low 20s despite having a 3.5+, she struggled on her Step 1 and Step 2. I have a friend who had below a 3.0 with a 35 MCAT and seemed more comfortable with his Step 1 score.
 
It's only logical that the VR has little to no correlation with USMLE since many of FMG's, who score above average on USMLE, would epically fail if they take the VR test.
